    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A former York psychiatric hospital could be turned into a retirement complex if plans are given the go-ahead later.

    FORMER BOOTHAM PARK SITE

The Bootham Park Hospital site has now been sold to Enterprise Retirement Living after the failure of attempts to keep it publicly owned.

The psychiatric facility was shut in 2015 after inspectors from the health watchdog the Care Quality Commission said it was no longer fit for purpose.

Plans for the site include 125 homes for people aged 55 and over, with parts of the grounds opened to the public.

Senior councillors will be asked at a meeting today to allow officers to negotiate with the NHS and future owners of the site.

  5. Firefighters to lobby government for flooding helppublished at 11:27 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2020

South Yorkshire firefighters are heading to Westminster today to call for tackling flooding to be made an official responsibility of fire services in England - meaning they can then receive more funding for equipment and training.

Currently, the fire service's "statutory duties" are to extinguish fires, to protect life and property in the event of fire, to rescue and protect people in the event of a road traffic collision and to rescue and protect people in the event of "other emergencies".

However, the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) says fire services are not being adequately funded to deal with floods and it needs to be added to the list of statutory duties.

It comes after large parts of South Yorkshire were affected by flooding following heavy rainfall in November last year.

The FBU has been campaigning for flooding as a statutory duty since the floods in 2015, it said.

  6. HMV confirms Leeds store closurepublished at 10:58 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2020

Music retailer HMV has confirmed its Leeds Headrow store is among five due to close at the end of this month.

    CLOSED HMV STORE

The company said the five sites were no longer viable due to "extortionate" business rates in certain locations.

While the Leeds Headrow branch will close, the branch in the nearby St John's shopping centre will not be affected, it's been confirmed.

The Sheffield Meadowhall store had been at risk of closure but will remain open, the retailer added.

In a previous statement, the company said: "The closures are no reflection on our superb staff and where we are not able to come to a new agreement or relocate staff within the business elsewhere, unfortunately this does mean some of our staff will lose their jobs."

HMV was purchased in a rescue deal by music mogul Doug Putman in February last year after it went into administration for the second time in five years.

  8. York Theatre Royal criticised over panto cast decisionpublished at 09:57 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2020

An online petition supporting the long-standing cast of York Theatre Royal's pantomime has now been signed by over 1,500 people.

    Martin Barrass

The current cast - some of whom have worked at the theatre for more than 25 years - claim they've been told they won't be asked back after this year's run of Sleeping Beauty ends.

The theatre has told Martin Barrass, David Leonard, Suzy Cooper and AJ Powell this will be their last panto at the theatre.

Mr Barrass (pictured above in his 2014 panto role), who stars as the Queen in the current panto, said he'd been telling audiences at the end of the panto about the decision.

The move was “shooting the goose that lays the golden egg”, he added.

But Tom Bird, York Theatre Royal's executive director, said demand for the venue's pantomime was "collapsing", with ticket sales falling since 2008.

Mr Bird said: "York deserves a panto that is full on Christmas Eve and full on the last night and that's not happening, that demand just isn't there.

"We need to make something fabulous that is even more fabulous than what we do already."

Mr Bird described planned changes coming to the theatre as "brave" and said future Christmas plans would be revealed on 3 February.

  14. Sheffield students paid to tackle racist languagepublished at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2020

    University of SheffieldImage source, Google

The University of Sheffield is to pay students to tackle so-called "microaggressions" - which it describes as "subtle but offensive comments".

The students will be paid £9.34 per hour as "race equality champions", working between two and nine hours per week to tackle "microaggressions" in the university.

These are described as comments or actions which might be unintentional, but which can cause offence to a minority group.

It gives examples of what it means by microaggression - such as:

    • "Stop making everything a race issue"
    • "Why are you searching for things to be offended about?"
    • "Where are you really from?"

Rather than being about controlling people's speech, the university says it is "opening up a conversation".

It says the equality roles are being created in response to demand from students, training them how "to help their peers understand racism and its impact".

Sgt Andy Morton said: “It’s disappointing so many have now ruined their new year with an act of stupidity and they’re facing 2020 without a licence and with a criminal record.

“We have absolutely no sympathy for them. My team and I see the consequences of drink and drug-driving first-hand, and they are utterly horrific."
