When Mark, from Sheffield, found out his friend had taken his own life, he turned to running as a coping mechanism.

However, it took over - and Mark, 26, says he’d “be out running before I even realised I was doing it”.

Mark created it as a safety bubble – then couldn’t get out: “I couldn’t figure out any other way of coping with anything.”

It was only when he spoke out about his depression that his relationship with running went back to normal.

He says: “My identity was built around me being a runner. Now I’d say I’m someone who runs.”

  10. Horse forced to swim to safety in Filey beach dog attackpublished at 11:00 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2020

A horse was forced to run into the sea and start swimming to escape a dog attack in North Yorkshire, it's emerged.

    Gemma and Rocky

Gemma Owen says she was riding her horse Rocky (both pictured) on Filey beach when a dog tried to bite the horse's legs and neck.

Ms Owen says the only way of escaping was to go so far into the sea Rocky had to start swimming.

She says: "I became particularly frightened when the dog tried to jump off all four feet and grab his throat with its mouth and when it couldn't get there it was jumping up trying to get his muzzle.

"Rocky tipped his head back and started spinning round trying to escape the prolonged attack, before swimming out so far to sea to escape that waves were breaking over the saddle."

Onlooker Brian Denton, who saw the incident from the promenade, says: "You can't blame the dog. It's the owners that need educating."

Ms Owen says dog owners need to be more aware of how dogs might react to other animals and has urged anyone with a dog to take care and act responsibly.

Speaking at the launch of a campaign to tackle the increase in assaults on police, fire and ambulance staff, Hull firefighter Alistair Johnston said: "[You have] things thrown at you while you're trying to do your job.

"The social media thing - they'll be like 'I've got this' and they'll Snapchat it and 'This is what I've done' and it just becomes a game to them."

Emergency service bosses in the Humber region are now calling on the public to support them as they try to tackle what they say is an unacceptable increase in assaults:

In December, Burrow, 37, found out he had motor neurone disease (MND) - a degenerative condition which affects how nerves in the brain and spinal cord function.

Stopping overnight in Castleford, the team of walking supporters are setting off on 1 February.

They're due to arrive in Headingley on Sunday in time for Castleford's game against visitors Toronto Wolfpack, followed by Leeds Rhinos' game with Hull FC.

It's hoped supporters will join the team on different parts of the walk.

On a fundraising page which has raised almost £2,000, the walking supporters say: "Rob is one of those rare players of Rugby League who is respected and admired by all fans, not just those of the team that he played for.

"Many of us recognise the dedication, enthusiasm, skill and bravery Rob showed over his entire career with Leeds Rhinos.

"It is hoped that by raising money we can give a little back to Rob and his family and hopefully contribute to finding a cure for MND."

X-ray body scanners trialled in six Yorkshire prisons are to be installed in 16 of the most challenging prisons in England and Wales.

    Scanner

The instant internal images can reveal concealed weapons, mobile phones and drugs, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said.

Their installation at 10 other prisons in 2018, including HMP Prison Hull, Humber, Leeds, Wealstun, Lindholme and Moorland, saw a drop in violence and the number of failed drug tests.

HMP Leeds governor Steve Robson said the installation of a body scanner at his jail about a year ago had been "a real game-changer", as more than 300 items of contraband had since been detected.

The installation at the 16 prisons will begin in the spring with all scanners expected to be in place by the summer, the MoJ said.

The £28m scheme is part of a £100m spend on improving prison security.

Buildings on Woofindin RoadImage source, Google

Plans have been lodged with Sheffield City Council to build 29 houses and 132 apartments on the site in Woofindin Road in Fulwood.

The buildings were home to NHS Health and Social Care services, but the trust says it no longer needs them.

Under the proposals, all buildings except for the Edwardian-built Old Fulwood House would be demolished.

Council officers have recommended the application is given conditional approval despite concerns from local residents about matters such as the size of the development, increased traffic and impact on wildlife and trees.

The council’s highways and planning committee is set to make a decision on the plans on Tuesday.

The bird of prey was found severely injured in Birstwith on 30 December.

Two pellets were found in the kestrel using an X-ray (pictured), which meant the bird would not be able to fly.
