    A man has appeared in court in Sheffield charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life after a 12-year-old boy was shot.

    The boy was injured when he was hit in the leg in a drive-by shooting in Arbourthorne on 12 January. He was an innocent bystander, police say.

    Devon Gregory, 23, of Heeley Green, appeared in court charged in connection with the shooting.

    He has been remanded in custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday.

    South Yorkshire Police said six people in total have now been arrested in connection with the incident and released on police bail.

    A man who died in a house fire in Hull as well as a 10-year-old girl has been named by police as 47-year-old Garry Bolton.

    Firefighters tried to save the pair from their home in Wensley Avenue, Cottingham, near Hull on Saturday.

    Humberside Police said that while formal identification is yet to take place, the girl is believed to be Mr Bolton's daughter, Paige.

    Police say the investigation into their death is continuing, with officers working to identify the cause of the blaze, which started shortly before 07:50.

    The fire service said Mr Bolton, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and the girl, who died later in hospital, were the only people in the property at the time.

    A team of police officers will be based in a previously disused station in Barnsley following a successful campaign to reopen the facility.

    The Hoyland police station is to be reopened for the first time for a number of years after a campaign by six local councillors.

    The team, financed by Police and Crime Commissioner Dr Alan Billings, will begin work on 24 February and are due to move back to the Hoyland base once refurbishment has been carried out.

    Councillor Mick Stowe said: “We have never stopped working behind the scenes. All six councillors have not stopped lobbying, having conversations where we could and putting on pressure where we could."

    Neighbourhood policing teams were scrapped by South Yorkshire Police as a cost cutting measure several years ago but have been successfully re-introduced by Chief Constable Stephen Watson.

    A woman has been arrested after an elderly person was burgled by a person claiming to be a police officer in Hull yesterday.

    The incident happened at about 17:10, at an address in Hanover Court, Hull, where an elderly resident was spoken to by a woman claiming to be a police support officer.

    Humberside Police said the woman talked to the resident about security before allegedly stealing her handbag.

    The offender is described as white, around 50 years old, of thin build, with mousey hair in a ponytail, police say.

    A woman has been arrested on suspicion of impersonating a police officer, burglary and attempted burglary in connection with the incident.

    Floral tributes have been left in front of a fire-damaged terraced house near Hull where a man died along with his 10-year-old daughter.

    Firefighters tried to save the pair from the home in Wensley Avenue, Cottingham, on Saturday morning.

    Post-mortem tests are due to take place on Tuesday to establish the cause of the girl's death. Tests on her 47-year-old father were carried out on Sunday.

    Police said it was at the early stages of a "very complicated" investigation.

    Officers are working to identify the cause of the blaze, which started shortly before 07:50 GMT.

    The father died at the scene and his daughter later died in hospital.

    They were the only people in the property at the time, the fire service had said.

    A Sheffield councillor has called for an "urgent meeting" ahead of an upcoming appearance from American evangelical preacher Franklin Graham.

    Councillor Ben Miskell has written to Sheffield International Venues (SIV) asking to meet to discuss Mr Graham's talk at Sheffield Arena in June.

    Mr Graham, the son of the late preacher Billy Graham, has said he believes gay marriage is a "sin".

    At the weekend a demonstration took place outside SIV-operated venue Ponds Forge with people from faith and LGBT+ groups attending to voice their opposition to his views.

    In the letter to SIV chairman David Grey, Councillor Miskell said: "Given the strength of public feeling, I would like to request that you and the leadership of SIV/Sheffield City Trust attend an urgent meeting in the Town Hall to discuss a way forward."

    SIV, which is part of Sheffield City Trust, has previously said it does "not endorse [Mr Graham's] views".

    Mr Graham has said: "I'm not coming to Sheffield to preach against anyone, I'm coming to tell everyone about a God who loves them."

    A scheduled appearance by Mr Graham in Liverpool had been cancelled.

    From about 19:00, showers of rain, hail and sleet are likely, leading to a risk of ice on some surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing, the Met Office says.

    A yellow "be aware" warning for ice has been issued until 10:00 on Tuesday morning.

    Snow could also fall on higher ground, although this isn't expected to be substantial, the Met Office adds.

    Three people have been killed in two separate crashes in North Yorkshire this weekend.

    A man and woman died when the Nissan Juke they were travelling in collided with a silver Mercedes Vito van on the A59 at Broughton near Skipton, at about 21:40 on Friday.

    On Saturday, a 19-year-old man died when the VW Polo he was travelling in collided with a BMW X1 on the A629 at Cononley at about 20:00.

    An 18-year-old man who was also a passenger in the Polo suffered "life-changing injuries".

    The driver of the Polo, aged 19, suffered serious injuries while a 63-year-old man driving the BMW, his 63-year-old female passenger and a seven-year-old girl were all injured.

    Police have appealed for witnesses to both collisions to come forward.

    Hull has been named the worst city in Yorkshire for the number of deaths caused by air pollution.

    A study by the Centre for Cities looked at government data on health conditions linked to air quality.

    One of the report's authors, Paul Swinney, says: "In Hull in 2017 about 5% of all deaths in the city were as a result of poor air quality - that's one in 20 deaths as a result of poor quality air people were breathing."

    Hull City Council says its Air Quality Strategy aims to ensure air pollution levels are below the legal guidelines and are reduced wherever possible.

    The Centre for Cities report says air pollution contributed to the deaths of about 800 people across Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Huddersfield in just a year.

    A man who was crushed to death at an Army base in North Yorkshire has been described by his family as "a selfless and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend".

    Alistair Ferguson (pictured) ,58, from Richmond, was working for engineering firm Babcock at Catterick Garrison, when he was killed on 18 January.

    Police said he was carrying out maintenance on a military vehicle at Piave Road Barracks when he was trapped and crushed to death by a door.

    In a statement his family said: "Alistair was very committed, dedicated and took great pride in his work.

    "During this time he volunteered to be deployed on two tours to Afghanistan and he was truly honoured to serve his country.

    "Words cannot describe the shock and grief we are feeling. This tragic death should not have happened and we hope that no family ever has to go through this again."

    North Yorkshire Police and the Health and Safety Executive are investigating the incident.

    A teenager from Sheffield says she's fearful for her life after her adrenalin pen failed when she went into anaphylactic shock.

    Amber Sheppard, 14, who has a severe nut allergy, was taken to hospital after the needle in her Emerade auto-injector didn't fire.

    Amber says: "I didn't realise they couldn't work, I was terrified because I thought when I put it into my leg it would sort everything out.

    "Sometimes it's difficult when you know some people have died because of reactions and there's always the fear that you might be the next person."

    Batches of the pen have since been recalled but because of a shortage of replacements in the UK, patients have been advised to continue using them.

    Two people have been injured in a shooting in Leeds on Saturday night.

    A 28-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were treated in hospital for "injuries consistent with a firearms discharge".

    West Yorkshire Police said the shooting happened at about 21:00 on Eltham Rise in the Woodhouse area of the city.

    The woman has since been discharged from hospital, West Yorkshire Police said.

    Detectives from the force's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are seeking information about any suspicious activity in the area.

    A man who was arrested after counter-terrorism officers raided three homes in Bradford has been released.

    An Army bomb disposal unit was called in for support after the "discovery of some items" at one of the properties on Friday, police said.

    A number of neighbouring houses in Sutton Avenue were evacuated as officers carried out a search.

    The 38-year-old man has been released under investigation and police said the inquiry is not now terror related.

    The man had initially been arrested on suspicion of explosives offences.
