The route, which is behind St Olave’s School between Scarborough Bridge and Water End, could be partially closed so the flood barrier around the field can be extended as part of Environment Agency work.

The scheme, which protects almost 160 properties, is set to be approved at a planning meeting on Thursday.

Plans include replacing the 13 existing floodgates at homes on Almery Terrace, as well as raising the walls about 0.5m higher with glass panels, as well as a new flood gate behind installed at Longfield Terrace.

In a report, City of York Council officers say: “This area has a history of flooding and the proposed development is in response to an identified need to protect residential and non-residential properties as well as transport routes.”

  9. 'Time to prepare' as Clean Air Zone start date announcedpublished at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2020

Businesses in Leeds are being warned it's "time to prepare" for the introduction of the city's Clean Air Zone (CAZ) which it's now been confirmed will go live in September.

From 28 September, owners of the worst polluting HGVs, buses, coaches, taxis and private hire vehicles will be charged for driving within the zone's boundary.

Drivers of private cars, light goods vehicles, and motorcycles will not be charged.

The CAZ was originally due to come into effect by January, but that was postponed last year due to what the council describes as 'delays to goverment systems'.

James Lewis, the council's executive member for air quality, says he's "delighted" the CAZ will now go ahead, but businesses need to be ready.

"With six months before the zone takes effect, it is now time for businesses to prepare. I would strongly encourage those who may be affected to check their vehicle and find out more about the financial support and exemptions available," Mr Lewis adds.

A £6m camera system to monitor the CAZ has been installed, with about 300 cameras placed at more than 100 junctions.

Leeds' delayed Clean Air Zone (CAZ) will finally go live in late September, the city council has just confirmed.

    Cars in Leeds city centre

From 28 September, owners of the worst polluting HGVs, buses, coaches, taxis and private hire vehicles will be charged for driving within the zone's boundary.

Drivers of private cars, light goods vehicles, and motorcycles will not be charged.

The CAZ was originally due to come into effect by January, but that was postponed last year due to what the council describes as 'delays to goverment systems'.

Ahead of the zone’s introduction, the council says it's supporting affected vehicle owners and operators to transition to lower emission vehicles which won’t be charged.

Taxi and private hire operators have introduced more than 1,200 low emission hybrid, electric and LPG powered vehicles since the zone was confirmed, according to Leeds City Council.

A £6m camera system to monitor the CAZ has been installed, with about 300 cameras placed at more than 100 junctions.
