The Oughtibridge Road Safety Action Group is unhappy with plans to close access to Bridge Hill, which the council says is necessary to prevent further accidents.

Six people, both cyclists and motorcyclists, have been seriously injured there in the last five years, the council says.

However, almost 680 people have signed a petition against the proposal, which was handed into the council in January.

Councillor Bob Johnson said many ideas have been "investigated", however the "only practical way" to stop people being hit by vehicles pulling out of Bridge Hill is to close the road.

He said: "The issues raised in the petition presented to Cabinet haven’t been ignored. They were investigated and included in the report about this scheme along with consideration of all the other comments people have made in response to the consultation."

Mr Johnson added that the road changes include a new turning area for large vehicles, as well as parking restrictions being changed.

The council is looking at ways to reduce air pollution, which is says contributes to 500 deaths every year in the city.

More than 12,000 have taken part in a public consultation with "the vast majority" backing efforts to reduce air pollution levels.

If it goes ahead, the most polluting vehicles, like lorries and buses, could be charged up to £50 a day to enter the inner ring road.

The proposals are part of a drive to bring the city's air quality within legal limits by 2021.

As part of the consultation almost a third of respondents wanted the zone to be bigger and cover more streets.

Small businesses have also expressed concerns that the CAZ will negatively impact them, with some thinking charging vans is a bad idea.

Petrol or diesel driven taxis will also be charged up to £12.50 a day, with 95% of taxis in Sheffield needing to be upgraded, the consultation says.
