A new youth justice service in South Yorkshire will ensure young offenders take responsibility for their behaviour and make amends for the harm they have caused, a council report says.
Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley Youth Justice Services are joining together for the new service, called Reparation and Unpaid Work.
In a report, Sam Martin, from Sheffield Council, says: "Youth Justice Services provide support to offenders, rehabilitation, tackle the underlying causes of offending and give young people the support they need to break the cycle of offending and build productive and fulfilling lives.
"Reparation is a practical way to pay back harm caused by the offence, either by directly repairing the harm or through constructive work to help the local community."
The new service includes a variety of activities to pay back benefits to the community, including work similar to community service, the report says.
Mr Martin adds: "This will help young people to make amends for their actions, directly to the people and the communities their offence has affected."

The money raised will go to the hospital and Paces School, a special school in Sheffield which Tobias attends.
Tobias, whose previous plans for a sponsored walk were scuppered by the lockdown, said: "I heard about Captain Tom and I thought 'why don't I use my walker to complete a marathon by walking up and down my street every day?'
