Waqas Ilyas, 37, spent six weeks on a ventilator in intensive care after falling ill in early April

He had worked on a Covid-19 ward at Hull Royal Infirmary and was admitted to the same hospital after experiencing a fever and difficulty in breathing.

During his treatment, his breathing deteriorated so much he was transferred to a hospital in Leicester and put on a machine which took over his breathing in place of his lungs allowing them time to rest and heal.

Dr Ilyas, who has spent the last few weeks recovering at home in Hull, says he's “improving slowly” and hopes to return to work.

"I remain eternally grateful to all the doctors and nurses who looked after me and my colleagues who prayed for me and brought me back when the maths just didn't add up otherwise to my making a recovery," he says.

"The whole experience has left me humbled and grateful and I hope I can return to work and help others as best as I am able to.

"There are still some residual effects from the infection, but I'm working at home on my physiotherapy and am hoping to return to my baseline in another two months or so," he adds.

At the beginning of lockdown, Mary Taylor, 38, from Silsden, started going out on runs in fancy dress as part of her daily exercise.

Since then, she's almost completed 100 runs in a different costume each time, capturing the hearts of the village's residents in the process.

She says: "I had about 35 costumes to start with. I never ever thought for one moment I'd be hitting 100 runs in 100 different costumes."

The teacher has become a talking point in the village, with many people waiting by their windows to cheer her on and wave.

"I never thought I'd get this sort of response. I just thought everyone would think, 'Oh she must be the village idiot'."

Robbie Moore, Conservative MP for Keighley, awarded Ms Taylor an Unsung Hero award for her "selfless work and dedication to help others during the coronavirus outbreak".

Once her 100th run is complete, Ms Taylor says: "I'll be ready for a sit down with a cup of tea and to chill out.

"I really hope this has encouraged lots of children in the community to take up running as it can have a big impact on your mental health," she added.

Next year, however, she says she's applied to set a Guinness World Record for 100 runs in 100 different costumes across 100 days.

  9. Flooding and Coronavirus: 'I see the world differently now'published at 14:30 British Summer Time 30 June 2020

A community hit by flooding and the pandemic in a space of a month has been brought closer together, a vicar says.

Homes and businesses in Snaith and East Cowick, East Yorkshire, were engulfed in February when the River Aire burst its banks after heavy rainfall.

Rev Eleanor Robertshaw said the double disaster endured by the community had "brought home the importance to look out for each other and not to just live in our own little world".

"I see the world differently now,” she said.

"People have got to know their own community much better because of what's happened. There's been so much more neighbourly-ness, people look out for their neighbours, helping them with shopping that kind of thing.

"The fact that we all pulled together around the flooding and all worked together at that time, just sort of set the basis of that much more of a broad community spirit."

  13. Bikes to four-poster beds: Yorkshire's shed loads revealedpublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 30 June 2020

A four-poster bed, a canoe and several bikes are among the more unusual loads which have been found left behind after falling off vehicles on Yorkshire's busiest roads.

Details of the often dangerous shed loads which have fallen off the backs of lorries - and the tops of cars - in the past year have been revealed by Highways England.

A total of 8,982 items were found on motorways and major A-roads in Yorkshire and the North East in just over 10 months from June 2019 to April 2020, according to Highways England.

Traffic officer Nick Ainsworth, from West Yorkshire Police, says he once came across the entire rear of a box van (pictured above) on the A1(M).

He says: "It was still intact, but ended up on its side on the hard shoulder and we had to get a recovery truck to remove it."

Now, as roads get busier with the easing of coronavirus restrictions, Highways England is urging drivers to make sure their loads are safely secured before they set off.

Jon Hammerton, from Highways England, who patrols roads in West Yorkshire, says: "I personally have dealt with bicycles, a canoe, a fully assembled four-poster bed, a metal shed, and many other weird objects.

"Shed loads can close a road for several hours as well as putting people at risk. You must secure your load before you set out. It could prevent an accident and save lives."

Over 300 people a day have been visiting Hull Royal Infirmary’s A&E, according to the trust which runs the hospital.

As it looks to keep people apart as part of social distancing measures, the trust is asking people not to bring friends or family into the A&E.

Teresa Cope, chief operating officer at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, says: "If you are coming to our emergency department, please come alone.

"We understand people want someone with them when they are unwell or hurt, but we cannot follow social distancing if too many people come into our department."

Special provisions are being made for children or those with additional needs, the trust says.

  20. No new virus spike in Bradford - Councilpublished at 10:26 British Summer Time 30 June 2020

Bradford Council says it wants to reassure people there is not a new spike in coronavirus infections in the district, despite the health secretary saying on the BBC this morning that there is.

    Matt Hancock on TV

Speaking to BBC News, Matt Hancock claimed there was a spike in infections in Keighley.

However, the health secretary had "confused" Keighley with another area in West Yorkshire, the council says.

It's thought Mr Hancock was instead referring to an outbreak at a meat factory in Cleckheaton, Kirklees, earlier this month.

The council emphasises there has not been a spike in Covid-19 cases in the Bradford district:
