Sheffield could be placed into tier three - "very high" alert - when the national coronavirus lockdown ends, but it's still "difficult to call", according to the city's director of public health.
On Thursday, the government is due to announce which areas will be subject to certain restrictions as part of the local tier system when the current lockdown ends on 2 December.
Tier three areas will see households banned from mixing and pubs and restaurants closed, except for delivery and takeaways.
The number of people with the coronavirus infection in Sheffield in the week to 19 November was 258 per 100,000, government data shows.
However, this was a decrease from 310 the week before.
When asked about what tier he thought Sheffield might be placed in on Thursday, the city's director for public health Greg Fell said: "It's difficult to call. My default assumption is that we'll be in tier three at the end of 2 December.
"There's an outside chance it might be tier two, but - and it's an important but - the decisions will be taken this week and they'll be taken at the numbers at the time, as opposed to the trends.
"So, I'll stick with my default assumption and hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised."
Concerns were raised over lockdown rules and injured fighters putting added pressure on hospitals.

The prime minister says he will "immediately" investigate why rapid coronavirus tests promised for Hull still haven't arrived.
