Shot boy's mother to meet home secretary over airgun lawspublished at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2020
The mother of a six-year-old boy who was shot dead by his great grandfather with an unlicensed air rifle is due to meet Home Secretary Priti Patel later to discuss the case for tighter airgun laws.
Stanley Metcalf died in hospital after being hit by a pellet at Sproatley, near Hull, on 26 July 2018.
Albert Grannon, of Church Lane, Sproatley, was jailed for three years at Sheffield Crown Court in July 2019 after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
Stanley's family say they want to make it illegal for anyone to own an air rifle without a certificate.
His mother, Jenny Dees, says: "I find it's way too easy to go into a shop and walk out that day with an air rifle.
"I also want to talk about the lack of a database.
"For instance, if my grandad comes out of prison this year, there's no database there. He could go into another shop and buy an air rifle."
