This year's Pumpkin Festival is highlighting climate change and the house, in the middle of the canal, represents the repeat flooding in the Calder Valley.

The organisers say they want to get the message across in a fun and engaging way.

One pumpkin has been carved up to symbolise the schoolboy Jude Walker from the town, who marched to Westminster to lobby MPs about climate change.

Organiser Liz Warrington said: "It's all around Hebden Bridge town centre on Saturday and Sunday, with a live carving in St George's Square. You can download a map to follow a trail. It's a great way of exploring Hebden Bridge and the issue of climate change."

The £14m work which started in April 2019, following a tidal surge in December 2013, includes embankments, flood walls, and de-mountable barriers.

The project also includes 13-metre (42.6ft) flood gates which slide across the A1077 and are the country's first such defences to operate across an A-road.

Sara Haddon, chair of the South Ferriby Parish Council Flood Protection Committee, said: "Residents of South Ferriby Sluice are delighted that the new defences are now complete. Memories of the 2013 floods are still raw and the new defences mean that they can sleep easy as we approach the coming winter."

Pablo, who is now two-weeks-old, was born at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster.

Seen clinging to his mum Tila, the vocal Venezuelan red howler joins a troop who only arrived at the park earlier this year.

Named after their loud cries, the red howlers are the most common species of the howler family and can live up to 20 years in the wild, according to National Geographic.

In the wild, howlers can be targeted by hunters for their bushmeat.
