Read MoreA man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a woman in her 70s died in a crash on the A1 in North Yorkshire.
The 22-year-old from Malton was detained after the southbound crash at Leeming Bar just after 02:20 BST today.
The road was closed for more than eight hours as police and emergency services worked at the scene.
A blue Ford Fiesta, grey Ford Puma and a black Land Rover Defender were involved in the incident, with the female passenger in the Land Rover later being pronounced dead.
The drivers of the Land Rover and Fiesta both suffered serious injuries while the Ford Puma driver was uninjured.
The Malton man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, drink-driving and drug-driving.
North Yorkshire Police say he remains in custody at this time.

A senior nurse says the treatment of GPs by the media has verged on "bullying".
Nicki Credland, chair of the British Association of Critical Care Nurses and lecturer at the University of Hull, told BBC Radio Humberside that the treatment would not help the recruitment of staff.
Last week, the government said it was giving practices £250m to take on temporary staff in order to provide more appointments but the British Medical Association, the doctors' union, said they were "hugely dismayed" with the plan, saying it would not solve the problems.
Ms Credland said doctors were under a lot of pressure:

The southbound carriageway between junction 51 and 50 near Leeming Bar is currently closed.
It is following a crash involing two vehicles which happened at about 02:20.
The road is expected to remain closed for several hours, North Yorkshire Police said.
There are delays of about 40 minutes above normal journey time with four miles of congestion, National Highways said.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or those who were driving along that stretch of road at around the time of the are asked to contact police.
There are long delays after a lorry overturned on the M180, closing the road near Scunthorpe.
The HGV tipped over on the westbound carriageway between junction four for Brigg and junction three for Scunthorpe.
The lorry is in the process of being recovered but a diversion is in place for drivers.
