The election follows the resignation on Thursday of Philip Allott over comments he made regarding the murder of Sarah Everard.

Mr Allott had only been in post for five months having been elected in May.

He had faced multiple calls to stand down since 1 October, when he told BBC Radio York women should educate themselves about powers of arrest, saying they should know "when they can be arrested and when they can't be arrested".

He made the comments after it emerged serving Met Police officer Wayne Couzens had used his warrant card to falsely arrest Ms Everard for breaching coronavirus guidelines.

Mr Allott had repeatedly apologised for the remarks, but tendered his resignation saying he had "become the story".

In May, Philip Allott took 83,737 of the first and second-preference votes. Labour candidate Alison Hume was in second place with a total of 53,442 votes.

The district’s average rate in the week to 14 October stands at 721 cases per 100,000 people.

The average rate for England was 458.

You can find out the latest rate for your area here.

Senior North Yorkshire health officials are holding a briefing this morning about the high infection rate.

They are asking people to remember the basics such as washing hands, wearing facemasks and thinking about space and ventilation.

Last month, Louise Wallace, North Yorkshire's director of public health, said the rise in infections across the county was being “driven by school-age children”.

Dr Mike Holmes, the chair of Nimbuscare which run York's mass vaccination site, told BBC Radio York: "It is a worry that figures are going back up and we've seen a slow rise since schools went back.

"But we're monitoring it and the booster programme has come to try to enhance people's immunity."

Boston Borough Council said a small number of residents were still putting non-recyclable items in the blue bin, meaning less waste was able to be recycled due to it being contaminated.

The authority said it was offering residents a fresh start, but added that if bins continue to be tagged after this week enforcement action could be taken.

    Quote Message

It is down to each individual to take personal responsibility when it comes to recycling. It is important to ensure that the right materials go in the right bin. If we get it right, it gives the best opportunity for the materials to be recycled.”

John Gilbert (pictured) was sentenced at York Magistrates’ Court to six months in prison, suspended for two years, on Friday 15 October after pleading guilty in September.

The three offences included being an adult attempting to meet a girl under 16 years of age following grooming; attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and attempting to cause a child aged 13 to 15 to watch or look at an image of sexual activity.

They were committed between 2 September and 14 September 2021 while Gilbert was engaged in online chats with a person who he believed to be a 13-year-old girl.

North Yorkshire Police says during these conversations Gilbert sent sexual images, engaged in sexualised chat and made arrangements to meet the girl, but what he had not realised was that he was communicating with the police throughout this time.

Gilbert has also been made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and has been put on the Sex Offenders Register.
