    Boris Johnson has announced every adult in England is going to be offered a Covid booster by the end of the year to help fight the Omicron variant.

    The original deadline was the end of January, but the Prime Minister said the coming "tidal wave" of Omicron cases meant the health service would be overwhelmed unless the vaccination programme was massively ramped up.

    NHS bodies have questioned how this can be done by staff who are "already beyond full stretch" and have warned of an impact on the care they can provide.

    Dr Mike Holmes, from Nimbuscare, the organisation which runs the York vaccination site at Askham Bar, told BBC Radio York: "Don't contact your GP is the message, we will be putting additional availability for appointments through the national booking system over the next few days."

    About 20 firefighters tackled a fire in the kitchen of Akbars restaurant on George Hudson Street.

    Station Manager Tony Walker said on social media, external: "We currently have four crews dealing with a fire in a commercial premises in the city centre.

    "Please stay clear and allow us to deal with the fire."

    Everyone was safely evacuated from the building and no-one was hurt, a fire service spokesperson said.

    An investigation into the cause of the blaze has begun.

    An East Yorkshire MP has said the Covid booster programme should have been accelerated earlier in the year.

    A new target to give boosters to all adults who want one by the end of December.has been set by the government. The deadline was previously the end of January.

    Haltemprice and Howden MP David Davis said: "Last year the Covid infection rate took off in late September, death rates took off in October.

    "All respiratory diseases get worse in the winter. If this was so important why weren't we doing this in September," the former Brexit secretary said.

    Meanwhile a Lincolnshire health boss has said people shouldn't panic.

    Lincolnshire's director of nursing, Martin Fahy, said: "You don't need to do anything just yet, don't worry.

    "In the same way that you got the reminder, text, email or call up for your first and second doses, we will give you a call about your booster"

    The new booster target means people aged 18 and over in England will be able to get their third jabs from this week - as long as it has been three months since their second dose.

    Ten people in England are in hospital with Omicron, Health Secretary Sajid Javid confirmed on Monday.

    People have been told to work from home "if they can", as part of the UK government's introduction of Plan B measures.

    No evidence of dishonesty was found after allegations of theft and fraud were made against a funeral director in York, police say.

    A 53-year-old man and a woman, 33, from York were arrested in June, with accusations connected to the Hayley Owen Funeral Director firm on Boroughbridge Road in Acomb.

    North Yorkshire Police said no evidence of dishonesty was found, with no further action taken by the force.

    A police spokesperson described the inquiry as "complex and sensitive".

    "Our thoughts and thanks are with the families who were directly affected by the investigation for their cooperation during what was a distressing situation for them," they said.

    In a statement, Hayley Owen Funeral Director said: "We have worked so hard to establish this business and never had any complaints until these false allegations were made.

    "We take professionalism seriously so we have naturally felt betrayed, disappointed and disillusioned."

    More armed police officers will be patrolling the streets in East Yorkshire in the run-up to Christmas, it's been revealed.

    The increased number of armed officers is part of a plan to "reassure" shoppers and not because of a heightened security risk, according to Humberside Police.

    A spokesperson for the force said: "As part of our increased patrolling in high footfall areas this Christmas, you may see officers from our armed unit out and about.

    "We want to reassure you this isn’t cause for concern, it’s just one of our many plans to ensure you have a safe festive period.

    "These armed patrols are common for us, but due to the increase in numbers of people in certain areas, we’ve stepped them up, and you may see a higher number of officers."

    An 18-mile stretch of the A64 in North Yorkshire has reopened following a serious crash which saw a woman cut from her vehicle by firefighters.

    The road was closed between the A1237 (York) and the B1248 (Malton), following a two-vehicle collision which happened just before midnight.

    A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, external said: "Crews were called to a two-vehicle road traffic collision.

    "One female was trapped in a vehicle and was extricated using hydraulic cutters and spreaders."

    The injured woman was taken to hospital to be treated for a broken arm and cuts and bruises, firefighters said.

    Writing on social media, external North Yorkshire Police said: "The road is now open. We thank the public for their patience."
