Club 55, based on the first floor of Micklegate nightclub Ziggy’s, now has permission to operate as a sexual entertainment venue for the next 12-months.
It can operate as a sex establishment from 20:00 to 03:00 Monday to Sunday, and from 18:00 to 04:30 on York Racecourse race days.
Licensing manager Lesley Cook said she visited the premises last week to speak to the owner and manager.
She said: "They've only just recently reopened this element of the club within the last three weeks – they aren’t fully operational yet, they’re only operating a couple of the rooms."
Ms Cook said she'd advised the owner they would have to let the council know what the design of the signage for the club was going to look like.
It will consist of the Ziggy’s logo and the number 55, Ms Cook said.
She added: "So it will be nothing, hopefully, shouting 'this is a lap dancing venue' type signage."
Councillors on the licensing and regulatory committee voted unanimously to approve the application.

More than 120 firefighters were drafted in to tackle the inferno at Dalton Mills in Dalton Lane, Keighley, on Thursday.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said 20 pumps were called out just before noon.
Nobody was hurt in the fire which destroyed the building.
People living nearby were told to keep windows and doors closed and to avoid travelling through the area because of the smoke.
Nick Smith, from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, described the blaze as "challenging".
"Internally, the building has collapsed, the floor and the roof," he said.
The Victorian building, constructed in 1869, was once said to be the largest textile mill in Yorkshire, employing more than 2,000 workers.
It had been used as a film location for hit shows such as Peaky Blinders and Downton Abbey.
The complex was previously struck by a serious fire in 2011, when it was believed copper thieves set fire to the site as they tried to burn off insulation to steal metal.
Medical supplies, clothes, toys, baby food, nappies and toothbrushes are among the items donated.

The city council is to receive £19.5m under the government's Levelling Up grant scheme.
Leader Daren Hale said: "A total of £7.5m from the grant scheme is for Whitefriargate and it's part of almost £20m we're going to spend on this site and on the Albion Square site.
"These are two areas of the city in serious need of some tender loving care and it will restore them to their former glories."
The funding will also be used to open a new grant scheme to local businesses in a bid to bring unused floorspace back into use. It will open for applications within the next few weeks, Mr Hale said.
The family of Sarah Everard have said their "lives have changed forever", one year on from her murder.
Ms Everard, 33, who was originally from York, was kidnapped in south London on 3 March 2021 as she was walking home from a friend's house. Her body was found a week later.
Met Police officer Wayne Couzens pleaded guilty to her murder and was sentenced to a whole-life term.
Firearms officer Couzens abducted Ms Everard in Clapham, under the guise of a fake arrest for breaching coronavirus guidelines and drove her away in a car he had hired.
Her body was found in woodland near Ashford, Kent, metres from land owned by Couzens. She had been raped and strangled.
The case sparked national outrage and calls for more action to tackle violence against women.
In a statement, her family said: "Our lives have changed forever and we live with the sadness of our loss.
"Sarah was wonderful and we miss her all the time.
"Over the past year we have been overwhelmed with the kindness shown to us, not just by family and friends, but by the wider public.
"We are immensely grateful to everyone for their support; it has meant such a lot to us and has comforted us through this terrible time."

Residents of Grimsby have called on MPs to use their pay rises to aid support for Ukraine or poor areas.
From next month, Members of Parliament are set to receive an additional £2,200 annually due to “an increased workload”, a watchdog said.
Some have branded the move “disgusting” in light of the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, while others have suggested the raise was necessary to attract the right people to represent the area.
“With everything going on in the world, they shouldn’t be getting a pay rise," Cathy Burton told the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
She added how badly money was needed in parts of towns and cities.
Others took a different view.
Chris Loydall said: “If you want them to consider becoming an MP, then there has to be a decent salary.”
