    CCTV images have been released after suspects set fire to a parked car and ran away as flames spread to a neighbouring garage and vehicle in West Yorkshire.

    Two people approached a car parked on a driveway in Roberttown Lane, Liversedge, and set it on fire using an accelerant at about 01:15 on 22 January, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    Det Con Dan Ashton said: "The suspects involved have acted with no thought as to the danger their actions have posed, as demonstrated by the fact the fire they set spread to a building.

    "We are releasing CCTV images of the incident to illustrate what took place and while they clearly are very dark, they do show a general outline of the persons we want to speak with."

    Anyone with information about the attack, or who recognises the people in the images, is being asked to contact police.

    A North Yorkshire man who escaped the Russian invasion of Ukraine has said if it were not for strangers he would not have got out of Kiev.

    Lewis Edwards (pictured), 32, originally from Ripon and his Ukrainian girlfriend Tanya travelled from Friday until Monday night to escape.

    Mr Edwards said they avoided shells and air strikes by driving through rural areas, but could see tanks and explosions from a distance.

    Lewis, who had been living and working in Ukraine for the past seven years, said: "If we hadn't had help from friends, friends of friends, friends from all over Ukraine, I don't think we'd've got to the train station to get out."

    The pair were among hundreds of thousands who fled Kyiv in darkness, travelling hundreds of miles to neighbouring countries.

    Mr Edwards and his girlfriend left by car on Friday and drove west 310 miles (500km) to Lviv.

    From there, they took a train and bus for several hours to the Slovakian border, with the constant threat of shelling.

    "A lot of rockets; a lot of explosions; sirens constantly; reports of tanks coming in on different bridges and people being attacked," he said.

    His mother, Alison, in Ripon, said it had been a "mother's worst nightmare".

  6. Birth rate increase prompts 1,000 new school places planpublished at 16:38 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2022

    An increase in local birth rates is one of the reasons behind proposals to create hundreds of new school places in North East Lincolnshire.

    The plans, set to go before North East Lincolnshire Council, external next week, would see two new primary academies built and significant expansion of several existing schools.

    If approved, the authority, will appoint providers to run them.

    A report says pupil numbers have significantly increased due to a rise in the local birth rate, and was starting to have an effect on secondary provision.

    It warns of a shortfall in school places if action is not taken.

    Cleethorpes Academy, Laceby Stanford School, and New Waltham Academy are among the schools set to provide further spaces.

    Others facing pressure on places have also been consulted.

    Beacon Academy, which has recently been approved for extension, will be under a £3.5m government rebuild scheme. The Academy is set to welcome 150 extra students through its doors.

    A total of 980 proposed spaces have been identified across the borough.

    NHS staff and patients have transformed the grounds of a mental health recovery site into a vibrant garden.

    Over the past nine months, a group from Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, external have teamed up to plant shrubs, flowers and trees around the East Glade Centre site.

    Bird boxes, a wildflower meadow and a fruit orchard are also due to be added soon.

    Research has shown green spaces are beneficial for mental and physical wellbeing, can alleviate stress and provide psychological relaxation, the Trust says.

    Occupational therapist Victoria Catton said: “It’s been fantastic to include our service users in the work, as it gives them a stake in the site, alongside access to the therapeutic benefits of nature.”

    An 84-year-old thought to have fled to Morocco before his trial on charges of sending threats to MPs has been found.

    An arrest warrant was issued after Donald Wood, from Barnsley, failed to appear at Sheffield Crown Court.

    He was convicted in his absence of sending malicious communications to South Yorkshire Labour MPs Dan Jarvis, John Healey and Stephanie Peacock.

    South Yorkshire Police said Wood had been found since Friday's verdicts but did not say where he had been located.

    Wood, of Roundacre, who was charged with committing three offences under the Malicious Communications Act between 23 and 27 March 2019, is due to be sentenced on 5 April.

    Welcome to Yorkshire (WtY), the region's troubled tourism body, is to be placed into administration, bosses have announced.

    Chair Peter Box CBE (pictured) said "well-publicised legacy issues" - such as the departure of former chief Sir Gary Verity - combined with the coronavirus pandemic and problems with securing funding had led to an "incredibly difficult" three years for the organisation.

    He said the Yorkshire Leaders Board, which met earlier this week to discuss the agency's future, had decided not to commit to a multi-year funding package that would have given WtY a "sound financial footing".

    Mr Box paid tribute to staff, saying they had done "remarkable work in the toughest of circumstances to promote Yorkshire’s many attractions to the world".

    WtY - which was part-funded through local councils - had faced mounting questions over its value to local taxpayers. Its most famous event, the Tour de Yorkshire cycling race, has been cancelled for three years in a row.

    Vandals have hit a 13th Century church and graffitied parts of the ancient city walls in York.

    The wooden front door on St Olave's church in Marygate was covered in red symbols - one of five graffiti attacks around the city between 26 and 27 February.

    Sections of the city walls, known locally as the Bar Walls, were also defaced.

    A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Members of the public are quite rightly shocked by these instances of vandalism."

    St Olave's Church is named after the Norwegian King Olaf, who converted Norway to Christianity - a church is believed to have stood on the site since 1055.

    York is believed to have the most intact medieval city walls in England.

    The walls are punctuated by four principal gateways, which are known as bars - hence the term Bar Walls.

    Anyone with information about the graffiti attacks is urged to contact police.

    A woman dubbed "Britain's most wanted" over her involvement in a £1bn mobile phone tax scam has been arrested in Spain while walking her dogs.

    Sarah Panitzke (pictured), 47, from Fulford, York, was convicted in August 2013 of conspiracy to acquire criminal property, VAT fraud and money laundering and sentenced to eight years in her absence.

    HMRC officials said she had played a "pivotal role in a multimillion-pound VAT fraud and moved millions through offshore bank accounts."

    She was detained in Santa Barbara, Tarragona, on Sunday morning by Spanish police.

    Panitzke appeared in court and was remanded in custody as extradition proceedings began, according to the National Crime Agency (NCA).

    NCA International Deputy Director Tom Dowdall said: "Sarah Panitzke has been on the run for almost nine years.

    "Given the length of time she might have thought we had stopped searching, but she remained on our radar.

    "This should serve as a warning to others on our most wanted list – we will not rest until you are captured, no matter how long it takes."

    North Yorkshire Police has published its strategy for tackling violence against women and girls.

    The force said it would focus on providing greater visibility of the actions it was taking to protect females, and on fostering an environment that demonstrated "the best of professional policing standards".

    Chief Constable Lisa Winward said the force was already working in line with the national policing approach to the issue but it wanted to show the public it was "putting this crime at the heart of what we do".

    Last year a police watchdog said tackling violence against women and girls should be as much of a priority as countering terrorism.

    It identified major inconsistencies between police forces in how they tackle the issue.

    The report was commissioned by Home Secretary Priti Patel after the murder of York woman Sarah Everard by a serving police officer.

    A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after Class A drugs worth thousands of pounds were discovered in a raid on a property in Hull.

    The drugs with an estimated street value of £5,000 were found on Biggin Avenue on Saturday, according to Humberside Police.

    A 34-year-old woman and a man aged 40 were also arrested, police said.

    All three have since been released while an investigation continues.

    Two boys aged 11 and 16 have been arrested in connection with a suspected arson attack at a derelict school in Scarborough.

    The former Overdale School buildings in Eastfield, Scarborough, caught fire at about 20:30 on Friday.

    Both boys were arrested on suspicion of arson on Monday evening following an appeal to members of the public for images of the blaze.

    Det Con Amy McDougall, said: "Thanks to the excellent public response to our appeal, we’ve been able to obtain and review hours of footage and images which led to the two arrests on Monday.

    "We’re still considering the possibility that there could be more suspects involved in this terrible incident, which has deeply affected residents and past pupils of Overdale School.

    "All I can ask is that those who have yet to contact us with any images, videos or information, to please do so without delay, so that all those responsible can be brought to justice."

    A 14-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of arson on Saturday afternoon has been released under investigation.

    Pupils are returning to a Halifax primary school a month after a fire destroyed a block of classrooms.

    Fifty firefighters tackled the blaze on 1 February at Ash Green Primary School on Clough Lane, Mixenden.

    Head teacher Mungo Sheppard said: "Staff have worked unbelievably hard making sure rooms which had previously been a dining hall, a maths room, an ITC suite, were decked out as classrooms.

    "The fire-damaged section of the school has now been completely demolished, so there's just a big space where that was, which is quite sobering, but also quite exciting about what might come next I suppose."

    He added: "Playgrounds have been completely cleared and jet washed so that children will be able to play out

    "Squeezing four classes of children into other areas of the school is the real challenge."

    Mr Sheppard said the school had been overwhelmed with offers of support and help from parents and businesses.

    A 19-year-old man arrested in connection with the fire is due to appear at crown court on 3 March.
