    A single closed lane on the A1 is causing delays of 40 minutes for drivers.

    Highways England said they closed the northbound lane, between the junctions with the A606 and the A151 in Rutland, because of a stranded vehicle.

    And today's climate protests across the East Midlands were no exception.

    A police officer has been sentenced after admitting abusing computer systems to pocket lost cash that had been handed in.

    Leicestershire Police said 54-year-old property officer Julie Treen had registered cash as having been collected by the owners but actually kept it herself.

    Her offending came to light in 2015 when discrepancies were spotted on the system by the force.

    Treen, of Ridleys Close, Leicester, admitted theft at Leicester Crown Court and was given a two-year sentence, suspended for two years.

    She was also fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £9,360 compensation to the force along with £3,500 court costs and a £100 victim surcharge.

    Leicestershire Police said disciplinary action would now be taken against Treen following the conclusion of the case.

    Police have named a 34-year-old man who died after being hit by a bus in Nottingham city centre.

    Daniel Thorpe, from Highbury Vale, was struck in Upper Parliament Street on Wednesday. He died later in hospital.

    A former police officer says having a daughter made him want to protest for climate change.

    John Curran, from Nottingham, a former detective sergeant with the Metropolitan Police, said he was arrested alongside gold medallist Etienne Stott at a protest in April.

    He has not yet been charged in connection with the alleged public order offence.

    He said: "I've got no history in environmental activism.

    "I never expected to be here."

    Two men have received suspended sentences and been banned from keeping dogs for five years after being caught badger baiting.

    The RSPCA said Murphy Thorne and Dale Shields, both 22, were arrested after being spotted by a gamekeeper on land near Beckingham, Nottinghamshire, in April.

    A six-foot hole had been dug into the sett and the pair were found with spades, a net and two dogs - one of which was severely exhausted.

    No dead badgers were found but the RSPCA said it was possible a badger had died in the sett.

    Thorne, of Gray Street, Gainsborough and Shields, of Laburnum Avenue, Gainsborough, both received an 18-week sentence suspended for a year and were fined £415 after admitting badger baiting offences at Mansfield Magistrates' Court.

    They were also handed a five-year ban from keeping dogs. The two dogs they were with are to be rehomed.

    Police raided the old Loggerheads on Cliff Road earlier today and found about 100 plants.

    The Secretary of State for Education has told pupil protesters they "should be in school and should be learning".

    Speaking on a visit to the Roundhouse college in Derby Gavin Williamson added it was "irresponsible to encourage children to bunk off".

    "You shouldn't be protesting on a school day," he said.

    Pupils across the the country, including in Nottingham, Leicester and Derby, are "striking" from school today to take part in climate change protests.

    They are demanding more government action.

    Mr Williamson said there was more to be done but "this government has done more in terms of climate change than any government before".

    Climate protesters in Leicester are now gathering in Jubilee Square after marching from the Clock Tower.

    They are taking part in a nationwide series of protests and school strikes to demand government action on climate change.

    A man tried to argue he was not parked on double yellow line - because he was parked on the pavement instead, a Nottingham community protection officer (CPO) said.

    The incident happened on Dalkeith Terrace in Hyson Green at about 15:45 yesterday.

    The man removed his car after being told it would be towed if he left it there.

    He was fined £70.

    Large crowds of people have gathered in Nottingham's Market Square as part of today's climate protests.

    They are listening to speakers including two ten-year-olds from West Bridgford Junior School, who got a big cheer when they addressed the crowd.

    One said: "Parliament is doing nothing so we need to do something.

    "The earth is like an ice cream and no-one likes a melted ice cream."

    A man has been arrested after police found 100 cannabis plants at a disused pub in Nottingham.

    Nottinghamshire Police said they raided the property, formerly known as The Loggerheads, in Cliff Road at about 10:20 and remain at the scene.

    Olympic gold medal-winning canoeist Etienne Stott was among those taking part in this morning's climate change mass bike ride in Nottingham.

    The 40-year-old, who describes himself as a climate emergency campaigner, was arrested in London in April after joining in with Extinction Rebellion's protests.

    Talking about today's demonstrations, he said: "For me there's nothing more important because having an Earth that can support life and our societies in the future is the bottom line for everything.

    "Today is a historical moment. There's going to be a massive unprecedented global mobilisation and I'm glad to be part of that."
