The A1 southbound is expected to be closed for a "long time" after a digger on the back of a lorry is believed to have hit and damaged a bridge.
Police were called to the road, near Markham Moor, Nottinghamshire, at about 11:40 as the vehicle was blocking both lanes.
The excavator is believed to have hit the Priestgate Bridge and come off the vehicle carrying it.
Highways England said the digger damaged the carriageway when it fell off.
Nottinghamshire Police said there was also damage to the bridge.
A spokesman said no-one was injured but there is currently no estimate as to when the road will reopen.
Police officers in Rotherham are trying to find a man who's been missing since last week.
Michael Joynson, 31, was last seen at about 18:40 on Thursday in Swinton.
He has connections to Rotherham but he may have travelled to Nottingham.
Michael is believed to have a missing front tooth and has a tattoo of a panther on the upper part of his right arm, as well as a tattoo of a cog on his neck.
Anybody who has seen Michael or knows where he might be is asked to get in touch with South Yorkshire Police.

A local council leader has said Leicestershire County Council was "probably in the same pub" as a retail giant after neither attended a meeting.
Stuart Bray, leader of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, criticised officers from County Hall who raised no objections to an increase in when HGVs could use roads near Poundstretcher's Kirby Muxloe depot.
At a planning meeting to discuss the issue, he said: "We invited the county council to come here tonight and defend its comments.
"I think they are probably in the same pub as Poundstretcher. They're certainly not here."
He also criticised the firm for "bypassing democracy" after it appealed to the Planning Inspectorate before the meeting, citing delays by the borough council.
The appeal sidesteps the borough council but councillors unanimously agreed the inspectorate should be told it would have refused permission.
The county council said it "totally refuted" the comments and stood by its decisions on the issue.

About one in eight new cases of diabetes linked to obesity in the UK is now in younger people, research suggests.
Experts found 18 to 40-year-olds accounted for 12.5% of cases of Type 2 diabetes diagnosed in 2017.
In 2000 the figure was 9.5% - nearly a third less - according to analysis of 370,854 patients by teams from the University of Leicester and Melbourne University.
The research also found nearly three quarters of the under 40s were obese, compared with fewer than half of those diagnosed with Type 2 in their 70s.
