Nottingham's A52 Clifton Bridge will not fully reopen for another "few weeks", Highways England has said.

One lane eastbound, heading out of the city, is due to reopen this afternoon.

It was set to open yesterday evening but workers were unable to complete safety barrier installation in time.

Highways England's regional director Catherine Brookes said the work to repair the bridge is "at a critical stage".

"We will have three lanes eastbound and westbound [open] hopefully in the next few weeks," she said.

She added the bridge is safe but, because the investigation work involves removing concrete with people working underneath, Highways England decided it should be closed.

"I am sorry it is causing the level of disruption it is. I have over 100 people working on this round the clock to make sure we get this bridge open as soon as it is safe to do so," she said.
