One lane of the A52 eastbound heading out of Nottingham will reopen tonight to coincide with the end of tonight's Nottingham Forest match, Highways England has confirmed.

The road in that direction has been completely shut, along with one lane westbound, after inspectors found steel under Clifton Bridge had corroded.

The work and subsequent closures have had a huge impact on traffic in and out of the city, with police being called to help direct motorists in places.

In a statement, Highways England said: "The structure itself remains safe and we're reopening one lane on the eastbound side of the bridge to help those leaving the football match this evening.

"We know how busy this stretch of the A52 is and we're really grateful to motorists for their patience."

    Delays on Friday

Meanwhile, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has told BBC Radio Nottingham he will personally look at the Clifton Bridge closure.

Mr Shapps said: "It's not something I've been briefed on so I'd be very happy to follow up.

"I'll be going straight to my department and to Highways England to find out exactly what has happened. I promise to feedback to you."

  2. Emergency electrical works add to Nottingham traffic woespublished at 13:34 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2020

Heads-up motorists, traffic problems in Nottingham are about to get worse before they get better.

Emergency works are being carried out on the A52 Clifton Bridge after inspectors found steel in the structure had corroded.

Highways England said the carriageway is closed eastbound and one lane westbound while further tests are carried out.

The closures have caused major disruption to traffic in the city.

In addition, emergency electrical works by Western Power Distribution (WPD) have begun on Derby Road at its junction with Ilkeston Road and Alfreton Road.

Nottingham City Council has withdrawn all non-essential roadworks but said an electrical cable which supplies the high voltage network in the city centre is "at risk of failing".

WPD is aiming to finish the repairs by Saturday, an authority spokesman added.

Roads were congested on Friday evening due to A52 Clifton Bridge closure

Councillor Adele Williams, portfolio holder for adult care and local transport, said: "We will of course allow works of an emergency nature to go ahead and Western Power assure us these have to happen now.

"We really appreciate their proactive efforts trying to fix this remotely while Highways England's works on the A52 Clifton Bridge continue and while frustrating for motorists, they have assured us a failure of electricity here would cause additional problems across the city centre and so have to be undertaken."

Nottingham Forest fans have also been warned to allow extra time to get to The City Ground tonight for their home match against Charlton Athletic.

  4. Eastwood couple quarantined on coronavirus cruise shippublished at 12:52 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2020

    BBC News

A Nottinghamshire couple is among thousands of people unable to leave a cruise ship in Japan as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

Alan, from Eastwood, said the worst thing about he and his wife Vanessa being quarantined is the "strict limitations" on moving around the boat.

"I'm really quite keen fitness-wise. The room is only 10m (33ft) long - I suppose if I ran around the bed 500 times I'd do a 10k," he told the BBC via Skype.

They do however count themselves lucky to have a balcony so they can get fresh air and enjoy the view of Mount Fuji.

The couple were due to disembark from the Diamond Princess in Yokohama last week, but are now expected to remain on the boat until at least 19 February.

"There's been another 65 people taken off the ship because they've tested positive [for coronavirus], that makes 135 poor people who've had to go to Japanese hospitals," Alan said.

Passengers are confined to their cabins, but are allowed out one hour every two days, but "face masks are a stringent requirement".

Alan added: "I can't fault anything that's going on here at all, the crew have got an enormous task, they're still providing three-course meals every day, and delivering them to each cabin - there are 1,500 cabins.

"You can imagine what sort of task that is.

"It's certainly going to be a cruise to remember."

  5. Woman attacked man with table and extension leadpublished at 12:41 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2020

    Sonia Kataria
    BBC News

A woman who attacked a man with a table and extension lead in a hotel room has been jailed for nine years.

Claire Wilson, 39, of Southey Close, Leicester, and the man had checked into the Loughborough hotel together in August 2018.

Leicestershire Police said during the evening, the pair drank alcohol before returning to the room, where they argued.

Wilson then used the items as "weapons", causing serious injuries to the man, who reported the attack at reception.

She was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent after a trial and sentenced on Friday at Leicester Crown Court.

She was also ordered to pay a £170 victim surcharge.

Det Con Nicola Davies, of Leicestershire Police's Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit, said: "This case is an example that men can also be victims of domestic violence.

"The injuries the man suffered have had a profound impact on his quality of life and could prohibit him from gaining employment in future.

"I've also little doubt what happened will have affected his own confidence and could impact on future relationships."

  6. Teacher held hands with pupil at cinemapublished at 12:02 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2020

    BBC News

A teacher who went to the cinema with a pupil and held his hand there has escaped a ban from the profession.

Sadiqa Ali worked at Babington Academy in Leicester as a humanities teacher within the religious education department.

The hearing was told allegations by a pupil from a different school around Ms Ali's conduct came to light on 10 January 2018. The school suspended her pending further investigation nine days later.

Ms Ali was later dismissed from her position on 13 April following a disciplinary hearing.

The panel heard Ms Ali admitted going to the cinema with a pupil and holding his hand there in December 2017. She also admitted sharing a personal number with the pupil.

However, allegations the teacher told the pupil she loved him, kissed his hand or that her conduct was sexually motivated were not proven.

Despite stating Ms Ali was guilty of "unacceptable professional conduct", the panel said there was strong public interest in retaining her as a teacher, "since no doubt had been cast upon her abilities as an educator".

As a result, no prohibition order - which would have banned Ms Ali from teaching - was made.
