    A 24-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man who was attacked outside a nightclub in Chesterfield.

    Police believe ex-soldier Joseph Robotham was hit over the head with a bottle near Vibe, in Holywell Street, early on Saturday. He died in hospital late on Sunday.

    Connor Rose, of Baden Powell Road, Chesterfield, who is also accused of possession of an offensive weapon, did not enter a plea at the short hearing at Derby Crown Court on Wednesday.

    A judge remanded Mr Rose in custody and set pre-trial hearing dates of 20 March and 29 June. A trial has been pencilled in for 4 August.

    A motorcyclist has died in a crash on the A50.

    Derbyshire Police were called to the eastbound carriageway, between the Chellaston junction and the slip road for the A6 at Alvaston, just after 20:15 last night.

    The force said a motorbike had reportedly collided with a lorry parked in a lay-by.

    The rider, believed to be a man in his 40s, died at the scene.

    Witnesses have been asked to call 101.

    An elderly patient at Leicester General Hospital had a dream come true when Elaine Paige gave her a personal performance of the hit song Memories.

    The star accepted the request from Elizabeth Lester while she was touring the hospital with the Duchess of Cornwall meeting Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) volunteers on Tuesday.

    The singer and actress, who is an RVS ambassador, met Ms Lester on ward 22, a surgical ward where the 86-year-old is one of the patients.

    Ms Lester took the opportunity to ask Paige for a personal performance.

    She said she had "always loved" the star – and could not believe it when Paige agreed to sing.

    Paige said: "I think she [Ms Lester] was worried to begin with that she was going to have to sing.

    "I sang Memories to her and then she welled up and I welled up, there wasn't a dry eye on the ward.

    "It was a lovely moment."

    Ms Lester, who is waiting for an operation, said: "I've always loved her so it was very special. Her voice was just beautiful, no microphone or special effects.

    "I never got to see her you know, I always wanted to but have never been able to afford it."

    The insurance company Aviva has seen a 285% increase in calls and claims since Storm Ciara.

    The company said the majority of claims are coming from the particularly badly affected areas like Nottingham, Birmingham, Norwich, Sheffield and Bradford.

    Claims have included property damage - as shown below in Leicester - as well as flooding.

    UK claims director Andrew Morrish said: "We are monitoring the situation closely, particularly where there are flood warnings in place."

    The Association of British Insurers (ABI) added customers should claim as soon as possible.

    This morning's snowy weather in Derbyshire has shut the A6024 at Holme Moss and is continuing to cause "difficult conditions" for motorists.

    Derbyshire County Council said conditions have been tricky on the Snake Pass, Woodhead Pass, and in Holme Moss (pictured below earlier) and Glossop.

    The authority said it has gritters out but traffic issues in Glossop have been causing problems.

    Drivers have been urged to avoid the area if possible.

    An 86-year-old man has been left requiring skin graft surgery after being bitten by two dogs in Long Eaton.

    Derbyshire Police said the pensioner was attacked by two dogs - possibly German shepherds - in Meadow Lane on 3 February, external.

    PCSO Matt Boyer said: "The victim did not see where the dogs came from or where they went.

    "One of the bites to his arm is particularly nasty and will require skin grafting. He has been left very shaken after the attack."

    Police say they are concerned for the welfare of a Leicester mother and her daughter who have been missing since yesterday afternoon.

    Komal Karaji, 34, and her seven-year-old daughter Amaya Goraniya were seen getting into a taxi from her home in the Abbey Rise area just after 14:00 to the railway station, said Leicestershire Police.

    They are then believed to have boarded the 14:25 train to Birmingham.

    Anyone who has seen them or knows where they might be is asked to contact police.

    A fourth man has been arrested after a stabbing in Leicester.

    Leicestershire Police said a 25-year-old was arrested on Friday on suspicion of attempted murder but has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.

    Officers were called to New Parks Way at 17:26 5 January after a man was found with stab wounds.

    The victim was taken to hospital and has since been discharged.

    Three men, two aged 26 and one 25, all from the city, have previously been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and bailed.
