The new sites are run by local pharmacy teams, but vaccinations are not actually carried out in pharmacies.

They have been set up at:

    • Ikhlas Community Centre, Normanton, Derby
    • Jubilee Hall, Hatton, Derbyshire
    • Church Hall, Horsley Woodhouse

All patients eligible for the vaccinations will be contacted via the National Booking System.

Aftab Rehman, lead pharmacist at Pear Tree Pharmacy, said: "It is really important for the local people of Derby to be able to have this service available in the heart of their community."

He urged everyone who is invited to take the opportunity to book an appointment.

Pharmacist and Amber Pharmacy owner Baldev Raj Bange said: "Everyone has worked incredibly hard, and it’s a proud moment to get patients through the door and start vaccinating the highest priority people.

"This is a great moment for the team and for the whole community.”

A woman who suffered from a condition which caused her elbows to continuously dislocate said life-changing surgery has allowed her to pick up her granddaughter for the first time.

Last year Mandy Taylor suffered a nasty fall which caused a rare joint instability meaning both her elbows kept popping out.

She said: "I couldn't do anything for myself. I basically just lost all my independence.

"All I wanted to do was see my grandkids, hold them, cuddle them, but most of all, hold the newborn."

The Derbyshire grandmother said reconstructive surgery she received at the Royal Derby Hospital meant she can now pick up her one-year-old granddaughter.

The 55-year-old said: “This means the absolute world to me."

Her surgeon, Amol Tambe, took a tendon from her forearm and made it into an artificial ligament for the elbow, which has helped correct the dislocation.

As a result of the life-changing procedure, Mr Tambe was given the patient hero award at the hospital.

He said: "It’s the care that I would give anyone, no matter who they are, but for Mandy to take time to nominate me, wow, that is really special.

"It is not just myself that has played a part in Mandy’s journey – the physios, my secretary, the splint workshop, the list is endless."

Ms Taylor said: "I'm overwhelmed and so pleased that Mr Tambe has received his very well-deserved award."

"She was just one of those people that had a huge impact on anybody who met her so this news has been really shocking."

  15. University leadership faces vote of no confidencepublished at 15:34 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2021

    BBC Radio Leicester

The vice-chancellor of the University of Leicester and his executive board are facing a vote of no confidence.

It comes after the university announced it is looking to cut 60 posts with 145 staff at risk of redundancy to secure its long-term future.

Vice-chancellor Nishan Canagarajah said the university needed to "cease activity in a limited number of areas" over the next few months in order to build on its "key strengths" and "invest in people and infrastructure".

The University and College Union (UCU) said the proposals were "cruel and divisive".

David Harvie, who works in the university's business department and is part of the union, said staff are already overstretched and redundancies will make that worse.

He said: "Staff at Leicester University were already facing a triple workload crisis.

"A year ago we had unsustainable workloads.

"Then the pandemic came along - the university leadership responded by abandoning more than 160 casual staff - there was no reduction in work, there was more work and that work was shunted on to the remaining staff.

"We will be contesting these redundancies in every way that we can."

A University of Leicester spokesperson said they were "naturally disappointed" to learn about the vote of no confidence.

"We are currently in the process of consulting with colleagues about our proposals for change, and want to stress that no final decisions will be taken until this process comes to an end," the spokesperson added.

A man woke up to find the front door of his house in flames, police have said.

Nottinghamshire Police were called to Glamis Road in Nottingham at about 02:50 this morning after a report a bag containing petrol cans had been pushed up to the door and set alight.

Damage was caused to the door and window frames but the five occupants were unhurt, the force said.

Officers have now launched an arson investigation and appealed for information.

Det Sgt Andy Buxton said: "This was incredibly frightening for those at the house to wake up in the early hours and find their front door alight and it is incredibly lucky no-one was physically harmed.

"This is absolutely unacceptable and officers are working hard to gather the information we need."
