Two people have been arrested after men wielding machetes "smashed a door down" during an aggravated burglary in Mansfield.

On Thursday, two men broke into a property in Spencer Street, Mansfield before leaving empty-handed.

Nottinghamshire Police eventually arrested two suspects on Sunday after an icy car chase.

Officers pursued a Mini Cooper, believed to be linked to the burglary, along the A614 towards Leapool Island.

The car sped off from the officers before the two suspects got out of the car, while it was still moving, and fled on foot.

The Mini hit a parked vehicle before officers chased the suspects and arrested them in Warren Hill Close, Arnold.

An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy remain in custody.

  3. Vaccination programme steps up a notch in Mansfieldpublished at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2021

    Rob Sissons
    East Midlands Today Reporter

With a new nationally coordinated vaccination centre opening in Mansfield, the push to get the jab to people in the East Midlands has stepped up a notch.

Mansfield is now one of five across the region, with people also able to go and use ones in Birmingham, Coventry, Sheffield and Peterborough if they live within a 45 minute drive.

These are the nationally organised ones, which are running alongside those run locally by GPs.

This doubling up is key to getting more people vaccinated, which is needed as figures released last week showed how Nottinghamshire was lagging behind other counties when it comes to the over 80 age group.

When up and running, Mansfield should be able to administer 2,500 doses a day, but there remains the issue of supply.

One health boss described it to me as "lumpy" and that meant they had to pause the roll out to the over 75 age group for 24 hours in Nottinghamshire, so they could focus on older people.

"There were lots of RTCs where Leicestershire Police were requesting back up and they couldn't get ambulances in," he said,

    Kevin Stanley
    Reporter, BBC Radio Nottingham

Alfreton Road in Nottingham is absolutely treacherous this morning and it was interesting going up to the bus stops although the buses are diverted at the moment.

Normally in these conditions the roads are well gritted, and they're a bit slushy, but you can get up Alfreton Road without any issues.

But today, it's compacted ice and snow causing the problem and the buses can't get up here. Cars are going extremely slowly up the road and I don't blame them at all.

Ms Hazell said she had hoped to go skiing in France or Austria this year but had to ditch those plans becuase of Covid-19 travel restrictions.

"It was great fun and it put smiles on people faces and that was nice," she added. "I think we all need cheering up at the moment."
