How would you feel about swapping your traditional fish supper for squid and chips?

Government scientists say that warming temperatures in the North Sea may see squid replacing British favourites such as cod and haddock on the menu.

Squid numbers are increasing dramatically in the North Sea, along with other species that prefer warmer waters, including sardines and anchovies.

  3. Coningsby farmer worried about 'lack of harvest labour'published at 10:31 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    BBC Radio Lincolnshire

More now on the National Farmers' Union (NFU) fears that food will go to waste because farmers don't have enough workers to harvest crops.

They say the EU Referendum and a weaker pound has made the UK less attractive to migrant workers.

Tim Casey runs a farm in Coningsby, he says farmers were having difficulties recruiting before certain countries joined the European Union and he's worried the problems could come back.

    Quote Message

If you go back to just before Poland and some other countries joined the EU there were some serious issues. Down in Kent there were some crops in the fields left to rot because we couldn't harvest them. We just didn't have the people."

  9. Squid may become favourite UK meal as seas become warmerpublished at 08:59 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

The traditional British fish supper could be replaced by the likes of squid as the waters around the UK's shores - especially the North Sea - grow warmer, say government scientists.

Squid and other fish that thrive in warmer waters, such as sardines and anchovy, are flourishing around the North Sea, according to fisheries data.

Squid are now being caught at 60% of survey stations in the North Sea, compared with 20% in the 1980s.

But the likes of cod are heading north, away from British waters.

  10. Farmer's fears over lack of migrant workers since Brexit votepublished at 08:55 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Paul Murphy
    BBC Look North

There are fears food will be left to rot in the fields of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire because of a shortage of migrant workers.

The National Farmers' Union (NFU) is blaming the referendum and a weaker pound, making the UK less attractive to workers.

    Quote Message

In the longer term we may see the exporting of production overseas to some of our competitors, where labour is more readily accessible.

    James Mills, National Farmers' Union

The Home Office says it is in discussions with the NFU and will respond shortly.
