  16. New prescription rules in force across countypublished at 09:47 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

    BBC Radio Lincolnshire

From today you won't be able to get a routine prescription from a doctor for low-level medicines in Lincolnshire if you have a short-term illness such as a cold.

Health officials say the NHS now spends around £16m a year on prescriptions for over-the-counter medicines including paracetamol and antihistamines and savings need to be made.

    Quote Message

When it is possible to buy a box of paracetamol for 20p from a supermarket we think that’s a better option for most people than expecting their GP to prescribe the same thing at a significantly increased cost.

Dr Peter Holmes, Lincolnshire East Clinical Commissioning Group

Certain gluten-free foods, baby milk and oral nutrition supplements are also being restricted.

However they do say there are instances "where a patient’s clinical needs mean that these items will still need to be available on prescription".
