    The Environment Agency has activated the flood barrier at the A52 and closed the road as a precaution ahead of the high tide and expected storm surge later this morning. 

    Diversions are in place in a loop via Alford using the A1111 and the A1104 and will remain in place until further notice.

    Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the predicted storm surge in the east of England, with severe flood warnings put in place by the Environment Agency.

    High tides and gales are expected to bring disruption along the east coast on Friday morning, the "severe" categorisation meaning the agency is warning of "danger to life".

    I'll keep you up-to-date with what's happening and where it's happening throughout the morning.

    Our radio stations in affected areas will have regular updates through the evening and throughout the night and will bring you live updates as events change.

    We will be covering the surge on this page from 04:00 on Friday but in the meantime, here's more information to help you stay safe:

    • The time and date of the forecast high water in Lincolnshire is 06:00 on 13 January 2017 and at 17:45 on 13 January 2017.
    • It's around 04:20 in North Yorkshire.
    • One hundred soldiers from the 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment have been drafted in to assist Lincolnshire Police.
    • You are being advised to prepare for the risk of flooding if you are in one of the warning areas. 
    • There are seven flood warnings now in place and more than three thousand properties are affected. 
    • You can check the Environment Agency's Flood Aware Map, external if you want to find out if you are at risk.
    • Four schools in Lincolnshire have confirmed they will be closed tomorrow.
    • A rest centre has been opened at the Meridian Leisure Centre in Louth.
    • Emergency Services will now be monitoring the situation throughout the day tomorrow - not just at high tide times.

    The head of emergency planning in Lincolnshire has told the BBC that the response to tomorrow's tidal surge is not an overreaction.

    Ian Reid says the team will be watching developments throughout the night ahead of the first high tide at around 06:00 on Friday.

    He said although the team are in precautionary mode, they will continue to monitor the weather until at least Saturday lunchtime.

    The Minister for the Armed Forces, Mike Penning, says the army will always be on hand to help civilians if required.

    It's after soldiers from the 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment were drafted in to assist Lincolnshire Police, warning residents in Skegness whose homes are at risk.

    There are now 55 flood warnings in place for England and Wales and 70 flood alerts. 

    Residents across North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and the Humber and Lincolnshire are being warned over the possibility of particularly high tides early on Friday morning and again in the afternoon.

    Seven flood warnings have been issued for the east of the county including for the River Haven at Boston for tomorrow's high tides.

    I'm in Scarborough in North yorkshire this eveving.

    This area is due to see high tide around 04:30 on Friday.

    The landlord at the Lord Nelson in the town says traders will be staying up overnight ahead of tomorrow's storm surge.

    Many have boarded up there properties in preparation.

    BBC Radio Lincolnshire reporter Rod Whiting is now in the emergency planning room with the county's chief constable Neil Rhodes, who's urging residents in at-risk areas to take action. 

    He says they're now looking at a wider window of flood risk along the Lincolnshire coast.

  19. Tidal surge preparations: Army on the streets of Skegnesspublished at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2017

    More pictures have come in of soldiers being deployed to assist Lincolnshire Police in Skegness tonight.

    These soldiers are from one of the three UK Standby Battalions, held at readiness to respond to UK contingencies and emergencies.

    They have deployed with four-wheel drive vehicles to enable them to assist with evacuations if the weather deteriorates.

    The principal cause of a storm surge is high winds pushing the seawater towards the coast.

    There is also a smaller contribution from the low pressure at the centre of the storm "pulling" the water level up - a similar effect to what happens when you drink through a straw.

    The strong winds can generate large waves on top of the surge which can then damage sea defences or cause water to spill over the top of defences, which increases the flood risk to coastal communities.
