    Lizzie Musham

    KittensImage source, RSPCA

A new report from the Centre of Crime Prevention reveals that in the majority of cases people convicted of animal cruelty have also committed other crimes - everything from robbery to murder.

The centre thinks that punishing cruelty with tougher sentences will also lead to a reduction in crimes against people.

Here in Lincolnshire figures over five years show that of 115 people convicted of animal cruelty six were sent to prison or a young offenders institution - that's just over 5%.

At the moment the most common result of a conviction is community service or a fine

Dr Kieran Sharrock (pictured above) - from the Lincolnshire Local Medical Committee - says practices are having to cut back on some treatments because of a lack of funding.

The force is working more closely with health services to transfer people with mental health problems for professional treatment, instead of into custody.

A mental health nurse is also working in the police control room. Those involved say it's had an immediate impact on the provision of care.

    Quote Message

Even in the first week of operation, the mental health professionals have dealt with 60 incidents. Of those, 40 have meant that people have been diverted away from police cells or accident and emergency. To me that's 40 people who've received better care because of this service."
