East Lindsey, North Kesteven and South Holland district councils are paying staff above the HMRC's recommended rate of 45p per mile.

Both North Kesteven and East Lindsey pay their workers 65p per mile and South Holland pays 52.2p.

The TaxPayers' Alliance, who discovered the figures, estimate that thousands of pounds is spent on petrol unnecessarily.

This is taxpayers' money and I think taxpayers get very frustrated when they hear about councils cutting back on services or bin collection, and then they hear that staff are receiving all of these perks that are above and beyond what is advised.

Chloe Westley, The Tax Payers' Alliance

East Lindsey Council responding by saying it is actively working to reduce its mileage costs through the use of pool cars.

South Holland District Council and North Kesteven Councils say their petrol costs are set independently and that they don't think there's an issue with how much they pay.
