  1. County council 'couldn't spare gritters' to help marketpublished at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2017

    Corazon Garcia
    BBC Radio Lincolnshire

It's emerged that Lincoln's Christmas Market almost opened to locals on Sunday - but the county council couldn't get extra staff to make it happen.

Organisers decided to close the flagship event for its final day after heavy snow was forecast - but never materialised.

The City of Lincoln Council, which organised the event, has confirmed it asked Lincolnshire County Council - which is in charge of gritters to help out so the market could go ahead on Sunday.

The county council's admitted it did receive a request from the city council to help keep the market open, but said it couldn't assist because it didn't have enough gritters or staff to spare.

    Quote Message

On Saturday evening we asked the highways authority if they could support Lincoln Christmas Market by providing some enhanced localised gritting around the market, at our Park and Ride site and the coach park.

Grantham's overnight A&E service will not be reinstated any time soon, say health bosses.

Last month the trust board said it was on the brink of reopening the department overnight.

But an independent review has concluded that it still does not have enough doctors.

The A&E closed overnight in August 2016 because of the staffing issues, now the trust says it's looking to offer an urgent care centre instead.

Claire and CharlotteImage source, Luke and Ryan Hart

Luke Hart could never have foreseen his "controlling" father would kill his mother and sister in July 2016.

Claire Hart, 50, was shot dead outside a swimming pool in Spalding, with daughter Charlotte, 19, days after finally moving out of the family house.

  7. Christmas market grit request rejectedpublished at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    Maggie Curtis
    News Editor, BBC Radio Lincolnshire

More on the cancellation of the last day of Lincoln's Christmas market.

    Lincoln Christmas Market

Today Lincolnshire County Council confirmed they turned down a request from the City of Lincoln Council to provide extra gritting around Lincoln for the market.

The authority says it would have taken gritters away from salting routes throughout Lincolnshire.

    Quote Message

The city council asked whether we could grit additional areas around the market, but given the freezing temperatures across Lincolnshire, we had to focus on treating the key routes for the county, including the main roads into Lincoln. That's around 1,900 miles of highway, and required all our gritters.

    Maggie Curtis

  14. Lincoln Christmas market cancellation latestpublished at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    Barbara Stimpson
    BBC Radio Lincolnshire

One of the founding groups behind the Lincoln Christmas market says the city is a laughing stock after the cancellation of the final day of the four-day market.

Around 60,000 people were expected to visit the final day yesterday but it was called off because severe weather was forecast.

    StallImage source, FFN Lincoln

The Lincoln branch of FFN says it's unlikely their German twin group in Neustadt will return to the event.

Around £6,000 worth of gluhwein had to be thrown away.

Stall holders were told on Saturday night about the decision to close early.

Mark Brewer from FFN says he understands it was a difficult decision to make - but it came too late:

    Quote Message

If it was made at 17:30 all the stallholders should've been told at 17:30 because then we would not have restocked our urns, started to heat them up which meant yesterday we had to chuck it all away.
