Richard Ford was serving a 30-month sentence at HMP Nottingham for possessing a knife when he made the threats from his cell in January 2016.

The 39-year-old was jailed for ten counts of making threats to kill a police officer, members of prison staff, a judge, a fellow inmate and a former partner at Lincoln Crown Court in December 2016.

At the Court of Appeal today, his barrister, Sam Robinson argued his sentence should have been less than 10 years - the maximum term for threats to kill.

Ford was a man of "extraordinarily low IQ", he said, who, having been behind bars for other offences, had become "institutionalised" and committed crimes in order to stay in jail.

The judges, led by Sir Brian Leveson, reserved judgment on Ford's appeal until a later date.
