A senior US official told a Senate panel that Mr Trump had decided to "pause" the import duties while further discussions took place.

The tariffs, of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminium, are due to come into effect on Friday and there had been concerns that it could have hit the Scunthorpe steel industry.

However, Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of the Community union, says while the exemption is welcome, "it's only part of the solution":

    Quote Message

If the Trump tariffs go ahead, that will still mean millions of tonnes of steel looking for a new market, putting at risk thousands of steelworkers' jobs. That's why the UK government needs to ensure the EU takes the necessary steps to introduce safeguards for all steel products affected by US tariffs."
