  3. Where next for the East Coast Main Line?published at 08:00 British Summer Time 17 May 2018

For the third time in just over a decade, the government has called a halt to the East Coast Main Line rail franchise. So, what happens now?

    Virgin trainImage source, Getty Images

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling says it will be put in the hands of a public-private partnership at least until about 2020.

For two years the line will be state-run, by an operator of last resort, set up and overseen by the department of transport but involving private sector firms including engineering firm Arup.

Passengers and staff shouldn't see any disruption to day-to-day services, according to the transport secretary.

After 2020 the aim is that there will be much closer cooperation between state-owned Network Rail, which owns the track infrastructure, and whoever is operating the train service.

The East Coast Mainline, which is being renamed London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), a brand resurrected from the 1940s, will then be run by a public-private partnership.

  4. Crowds' anger at RAF Dambusters flypast mix-uppublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 17 May 2018

Crowds of people were left disappointed on Wednesday after a mix-up led to them missing a highly anticipated flypast by an RAF Typhoon over the Derwent Dam.

Spectators were initially informed a Lancaster Bomber, marking the 75th anniversary of the Dambusters raid from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, would not fly due to bad weather.

They were then told its replacement, a Typhoon, would also not fly - only for it to roar over minutes later.

The RAF has apologised to those who attended the event for the confusion.

  8. Rail campaigners not convinced by Government assurancespublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 16 May 2018

There are fears that the renationalisation of the East Coast main line could see Lincoln miss out on promised new services to the capital.

As we told you earlier, the Government's said there may be a delay to new trains which were due to be introduced by Virgin Trains East Coast next year.

But officials from the Department for Transport say the services to Lincoln Central (above) will be introduced - even if that's slightly later than expected.

But David Mitchell - a rail campaigner from Lincoln is not convinced by the assurances.

    Quote Message

When push comes to shove Lincolnshire will lose out and the city of Lincoln especially. We're the end of the line, the bottom of the bucket. They're not bothered about us. The emphasis now is getting up to Edinburgh and Glasgow, or Newcastle, or York or Leeds.

  9. The Dambuster event flypast; what happened?published at 17:38 British Summer Time 16 May 2018

Earlier today we told you about a Lancaster bomber flypast being cancelled because of low cloud.

Instead, a Typhoon jet was to perform the task over the Derwent to mark the 75th anniversary of the Dambuster raids.

But confusion came when hundreds of people who'd turned out to see it heard that the whole thing was being called off, and there'd be no fly-past.

However, it did happen, but later than planned, meaning many missed it as they'd left the site.

    Here's the explanation:

The pilot was able to make the journey across the dam from the south instead of the north. This made him late, but able to complete the flight. Sadly weather conditions are out of our control and we fell victim to them this year."

The current joint operators, Stagecoach and Virgin, had been negotiating a new contract with the Department for Transport.

But Stagecoach has said it now understood Transport Secretary Chris Grayling is "no longer considering" the firms for the deal.

Mick Cash, general secretary of the RMT union, said: "Instead of being a temporary arrangement, Chris Grayling should listen to his staff and the public and make it permanent."

Meanwhile, Anthony Smith, chief executive of independent watchdog Transport Focus, said: "Whichever organisation runs East Coast services, passengers will be looking for the quality of current services to be maintained and built on."

People waiting for a flypast by a Typhoon at the Derwent Dams in Derbyshire have been left angry after being told it wouldn't happen...only to see the aircraft fly over as they left the site.

The aircraft was drafted in at the last minute to replace a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) Lancaster Bomber on a flight commemorating 75 years since the Dambusters raid.

The RAF Coningsby-based Lancaster had to pull out because of windy weather and earlier this lunchtime the BBMF commanding officer tweeted this:

  20. East Coast: 'Surprise' at return to public controlpublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 16 May 2018

Stagecoach and Virgin Trains were awarded an eight-year contract in 2014 to run the London to Edinburgh line - but they've been losing millions of pounds.

In a stock market statement, Stagecoach chief executive Martin Griffiths, said: "We are surprised and disappointed that the Department for Transport has chosen not to proceed with our proposals."

"Today's decision should not detract from the hard work and dedication of our people at Virgin Trains East Coast"

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling is expected to make a statement to parliament shortly.
