It had been hoped that the Lancaster Bomber would make the flight over the Derwent Valley today, but high winds have made it impossible.

The flypast was due to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Dambuster raids from RAF Scampton which destroyed several dams in Germany during World War Two.

In a statement, the RAF Coningsby-based BBMF says: "We are so sorry to disappoint those who wished to see our Lancaster as once those original 617 Sqn aircraft did, but hope you will enjoy the might and speed of world class, multi-role Typhoon."

The decision was made because the BBMF's Lancaster is one of only two airworthy examples in the world and there are "strict limitations" on the conditions it can fly in, the BBMF adds.
