Officers from three police forces, including Lincolnshire's, are coming together today to celebrate the life of the country's first warranted police woman.
Edith Smith, who walked the beat in Grantham, died in 1923 but recently it emerged that she was buried in an unmarked grave in Runcorn, Cheshire.
Edith, who was born in Birkenhead, was given the power of arrest after being posted to Grantham to assist with "drunkenness, the widespread use of cocaine, prostitution and the consequent spread of venereal disease, external".
Officers and staff have raised £2,500 for a new headstone for her grave and a service is being held at St Mary's Church in Runcorn, attended by her granddaughter who's now in her 80s.
