  1. Queen to reopen British Museum gallerypublished at 09:46 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2017

    The Queen is to pay a visit to the British Museum today.

    The monarch will reopen the Sir Joseph Hotung Gallery of China and South Asia.

    Twenty-five years ago, in 1992, the Queen unveiled the original gallery.

    Refurbished and revamped, it now features new displays telling the stories of China and the South Asian countries of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal from 5000 BC up to the present day.

    Founded in 1753, the British Museum in central London was the first national public museum in the world.

    Five rail operators are facing disruption due to strike action by the Rail, Maritime and Transport union.

    Workers on Southern, Greater Anglia and South Western Railway are striking for 48 hours, while staff on Merseyrail and Northern have walked out for 24 hours.

    The union is in dispute over driver-only operated (DOO) trains, also known as driver-controlled operated (DCO).

    Aslef is also in dispute with Southern, and will give the result of a ballot of train drivers on a proposed deal later.

    Police investigating after a woman went missing from her home in Hammersmith have found a body.

    Katie Chopra, 41, had been reported missing from her home on 31 October.

    On Tuesday 7 November a woman's body was found in the Eastbourne area.

    The Metropolitan Police and Sussex Police say the death is not being treated as suspicious and the East Sussex Coroner has been informed.

    Katie’s family has been informed.

    One man is in a life threatening condition in hospital and another received cuts to his head after they were attacked by a group of men and women in Oxford Circus Underground Station.

    The group of eight to 12 people got involved in an "altercation" with the men after they left the southbound Bakerloo line train at about 23:30 on 5 November, British Transport Police (BTP) said.

    The man was knocked unconscious and suffered bleeding and swelling on the brain and a fractured skull. Police said he remains in hospital "in a life threatening and life changing condition."

    The other man received cuts to his head but has since been discharged from hospital.

    BTP have released 10 CCTV images of people they are trying to locate in connection with the attack.

  14. Teenager critical after police 'tactical stop' of mopedpublished at 17:36 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2017

    A teenager is in a critical condition after police conducted a "tactical stop" of his moped.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the officers' actions after the incident in Bexley, south-east London, earlier.

    Officers identified a moped with a pillion passenger being driven dangerously in Eastern Way at around 01:20.

    Upon sighting police, the pillion passenger got off the moped and fled on foot.

    "In the interests of other road users, public safety and the safety of the rider, a tactical stop of the moped was authorised," police said.

    The rider of the moped - a 17-year-old male - was injured during the stop.

    London Ambulance Service was called but no ambulance was available, police said.

    Officers transported the injured male to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

    The Met said its Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) has been informed, which has now referred the incident to the IPCC and an independent investigation has begun.

    Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of murder over the death of Michael Jonas who was stabbed in a park in Anerley.

    A post mortem examination found the 17-year-old died as a result of stab wounds to the chest and haemorrhage after the attack in Betts Park on Thursday.

    The two arrested boys, aged 17 and 16, are in custody at a south London police station.

    Another 16-year-old boy who was arrested on Saturday has been released with no further action, Scotland Yard said.
