The London Fire Brigade is urging people in the capital to stay safe when using portable heaters during this week's cold spell.

Dan Daly, the Brigade’s assistant commissioner for fire safety, said fires typically start when bedding, blankets or clothes are put too close to heaters.

“Fires involving heaters can be easily prevented if people take some sensible, common sense precautions," he added.

“Steps like keeping flammable items, such as curtains, blankets and furniture well away from heaters can make all the difference. It’s also important not to sit too close to them, especially if you’re likely to fall asleep.”

The High Court has rejected the legal case against the HDV (Haringey Development Vehicle) and ruled in favour of Haringey Council to go ahead if it chooses.

But the council leader Claire Kober has already said at a meeting at the full council last night that she would not make a decision on whether to proceed on HDV and would leave that decision to the administration that takes over in May.

Ms Kober's administration had a public row with members of Momentum over the controversial regeneration plans.

Momentum had urged the council to halt a controversial £2bn deal with a private property developer to build 6,500 new homes.

Ms Kober says she will stand down as council leader after May's local elections.

Her decision comes after 22 Haringey councillors opposed to the scheme asked Labour's National Executive (NEC) to intervene in the scheme known as theHaringey Development Vehicle (HDV), external.
