    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A “malicious” letter sent to senior officers at Lewisham Council by a “whistle-blower” is being investigated by police.

The letter came after the council began an investigation into allegations of “improper activity” against a councillor and council officers, to do with the council’s chief executive.

When asked to give more details, the complainant refused and then sent a “very threatening and extremely intimidating” letter to senior council staff, Lewisham Council head of law Kath Nicholson explained at a standards committee meeting.

“I have referred it to the police, who are investigating. They are satisfied it is malicious communications,” she said.

This comes after Lewisham Council staff were targets of violence from demonstrators protesting outside the New Cross Assembly at the Mulberry Centre in Amersham Vale earlier this month.

A senior council officer’s car was damaged by demonstrators while Lewisham Mayor Damien Egan was inside.

An investigation into the letter is ongoing.

  15. Children vaccinated in bid to stop measles outbreakpublished at 16:56 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November 2018

Hackney medics have moved to address a recent outbreak of measles in the borough with a programme of vaccinations which has seen 500 children immunised against the disease.

The programme is seeking to address concerns over low vaccination figures for north-east Hackney, against a background of declining figures for innoculations across the borough generally.

There were 38 confirmed cases of measles in Hackney as of 19 November.

Healthwatch Hackney director Jon Williams said: "The local measles outbreak is extremely worrying.

“We are deeply concerned children in the borough continue to be at risk of this devastating disease because of persistently low immunisation rates."

The NHS England report blamed a low uptake in London generally on a variety of factors, including the city’s increasing birth rate and high population mobility, inconsistent patient reminder systems, and increasingly competing priorities for GPs.

In Hackney uptake for the infants is considerably lower than the rest of London – 75.6% for 2017/18 compared to 89.2% for London, with a higher rate for two-year-olds, indicating a pattern of late vaccinations, according to a recent NHS England report.

Figures for the north-east of the borough are particularly low, with Stamford Hill Group Practice, Spring Hill Practice and Cranwich Road Surgery performance rates under 60% for giving the MMR vaccine for two-year-olds.

A City & Hackney clinical commissioning group spokesperson said: “Previous vaccination figures for north-east Hackney are being addressed with an effective immunisation programme which has seen over 500 children being vaccinated in the last three weeks."
