Emergency services were called to Smithfield Market in central London this morning after plumes of exhaust smoke were thought to be a fire.

London Fire Bridgade said four crews attended the scene after being called at 08:22 GMT to reports of a fire on a first-floor car park.

The City of London Police said the clouds of smoke were later established to have been caused by "anti-social driving".

Trading had already ended for the day as the market is only open in the early hours of the morning.

Police said there have been no road closures and no reported injuries.

  17. Murder accused 'thought victim was a paid assassin'published at 17:40 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2019

A convicted quadruple killer stabbed and beat his flatmate to death believing he was a paid assassin sent from Albania to avenge a double shooting, a court has heard.

Mane Driza, 41 - whose nickname is the Scarface film character, Tony Montana - is accused of murdering Stefan Bledar Mone at a flat in north London and leaving him with at least 120 injuries.

He allegedly attacked Mr Mone, 23, at his flat in Wembley, north London, in June 1999.

Mr Driza had fled Albania to escape police after shooting dead father and son Elmaz and Lavdosh Kannani, jurors were told.

Following Mr Mone's death, he shot and killed two more people at a bar in Catania, Sicily.

Mr Driza told police he came to Britain "to escape from the Albanian police and also from the relatives of his victims in Albania who wanted to take their revenge on him", the court heard.

He moved in with Mr Mone in London after separating from his wife.

Retired Det Ch Insp George Couch told the Old Bailey Mr Driza "was sure of one thing - that Bledar Mone was paid to kill him, because before this Bledar Mone was in prison together with the man he killed in Albania".

On the day of the killing, Mr Driza said Mr Mone had come at him with a knife and struck him with a baseball bat.

"After that he lost control," Mr Couch said. "He saw a lot of blood."

Last week the trial heard Mr Driza attacked his friend thinking he had stolen his wedding ring.

Mr Driza, of no fixed abode, has denied the murder of Mr Mone. The Old Bailey trial continues.

It's no secret that London has a very successful economy, not just compared with the rest of the UK but with other international cities too.

Over the past decade its economy has expanded by a fifth. Ever more shops, restaurants and bars have opened to serve its residents.

As a result the population of London and the urban area surrounding it has grown significantly, increasing by 1.1 million between 2008 and 2017 to 10 million people.

Yet despite this success story, not everything is going its way.

Many more people pack their bags and leave the capital for elsewhere in England and Wales than make the journey the other way.
