  3. Guided busway plan to boost airport linkspublished at 17:31 British Summer Time 23 May 2018

    Plans have been unveiled for a new guided busway to link parts of Cheshire with Manchester and the city's airport.

    A new transport strategy , externalproposes three "rapid transit" services similar to a scheme currently operating between Leigh and Manchester (pictured above).

    Two routes would link Wilmslow with Manchester Airport and east Didsbury, while the third would connect Stockport to the airport and Handforth.

    Mark Glynn, of Stockport Council, said the connections would help people "benefit from new jobs."

    The buses would use priority bus lanes on part of the A34 and bus-only roads between Handforth and Woodford, and between Handforth and Heald Green.

    A woman who saved her father's life after he had a cardiac arrest has met the 999 call handler who talked her through performing CPR.

    Adam Vali wears a pacemaker and collapsed in his home in Oswald Street, Blackburn, Lancashire, on 7 April.

    His daughter Nasim Patel had never had CPR training, but was talked through how to do it by Josh Hayes.

    Mrs Patel asked BBC Radio Lancashire at a Lancashire Lifesavers training session to help her thank him.

  5. Northern rail improvement plan to look at 'new driver roster'published at 17:11 British Summer Time 23 May 2018

    Urgent plans to improve services for Northern rail passengers will tackle a new roster for drivers "to get more trains running".

    The rail franchise has received widespread criticism for regular delays and cancellations on routes across the North West.

    Transport Secretary Chris Grayling announced earlier that improving Northern's performance is now his department's "number one performance priority".

    Measures include:

    • improving driver rostering to get more trains running now
    • increasing driver training on new routes to get more services on line as quickly as possible
    • additional contingency drivers and management presence at key locations in Manchester
    • putting extra peak services in the timetable along the Bolton corridor, including between Buckshaw and Manchester Victoria, and Preston and Manchester Oxford Road

    Northern has apologised to passengers for delays and cancellations following the introduction of a new timetable on Sunday.

    The plan will be discussed in a teleconference with northern leaders on Thursday.

    A jury has been sent home for a third night to continue considering verdicts on three people accused of murdering four children in a petrol bomb attack.

    Zak Bolland, 23, launched the attack after being involved in a petty feud with the victims' 17-year-old brother Kyle Pearson, Manchester Crown Court heard

    Demi Pearson, 15, her brother, Brandon, aged eight and sister, Lacie, aged seven, sleeping in a front bedroom, all perished in the blaze.

    Their mother, Michelle Pearson, 36, was rescued, severely injured, along with her youngest daughter, Lia, aged three, who died in hospital two days later.

    Bolland, his girlfriend, Courtney Brierley, 20, and David Worrall, 25, all deny four counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.

    Theresa May has paid tribute to people affected by the Manchester Arena terror attack in parliament.

    The Prime Minister said the night "saw the worst of humanity but it also saw the best" and said the "great spirit of Manchester continues to inspire us".

    A man has died after becoming trapped under machinery at work in Lancashire, police say.

    Officers were called to Graham Engineering Ltd in Edward Street, Nelson at about 15:00 on Monday.

    Colin Willoughby, 52, died at the scene.

    A joint police and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation is under way.

  10. Improving Northern trains is 'top priority', says transport secretarypublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 23 May 2018

    Transport Secretary Chris Grayling says improving the service for Northern rail passengers is his department's "number one performance priority".

    It comes amid widespread criticism of the company over cancellations, delays and the implementation of a new timetable earlier this week.

    The government is also currently investigating whether Northern is in breach of its contract to run train services on the Lakes line through the Lake District.

    Mr Grayling said "the level of disruption that passengers have experienced in the north is unacceptable".

    "Improving the service for Northern customers is the number one performance priority for my department and we will work with the industry to keep disruption at a minimum."

    Earlier, Northern apologised to passengers for delays and cancellations following the introduction of a new timetable on Sunday.

    The firm blamed many of the problems on delays in electrification work being carried out by Network Rail.

  11. Athlete runs heart-shaped lap of Manchester on attack anniversarypublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 23 May 2018

    An athlete ran 67 miles across Greater Manchester to raise money for the North West Air Ambulance charity.

    Chorlton Runner Nathan Rae, 37, completed the route which traced out the letters MCR inside a giant heart on the anniversary of the arena attack.

    His ultra-marathon effort passed Manchester Royal Infirmary and Salford Royal Hospital where many of the injured were treated as well as the Old Trafford and Etihad stadiums.

    Marks & Spencer is planning to close two stores in the north west.

    M&S outlets in Fleetwood in Lancashire and Speke in Liverpool will close after the retailer suffered a big fall in annual profits following an earlier store closure plan.

    The expense of closing stores and revamping the business cost M&S £321m in the 12 months to March.

    On Tuesday the retailer said it plans to close 100 shops by 2022, accelerating an overhaul that it says is "vital" for its future.

    Hundreds of workers at an NHS trust in Greater Manchester are on strike over plans to move their jobs to a private company.

    The Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Trust wants to move its cleaners, porters and caterers to a private company wholly owned by the NHS.

    But unions says it could mean lower pay and worse conditions in the long term.

    At precisely 22:31 last night church bells rang out to mark the exact moment of last year's explosion at Manchester Arena, in memory of the 22 victims.

    Train operator Northern has apologised to passengers after scores of delays, cancellations and overcrowded trains this week.

    New timetables were brought in on Sunday, which has made existing disruption worse.

    The Transport Secretary has been asked to intervene.

    Bosses at Northern say things will improve but admit that big improvements will only come when electrification of the line between Bolton and Manchester is completed in December.

    A man has died after becoming trapped under machinery at an engineering firm in Lancashire, said police.

    Colin Willoughby, 52, died at the scene after the accident at Graham Engineering Ltd in Edward Street, Nelson at 15:00 BST on Monday.

    The company specialises in producing hazardous waste containers for the nuclear industry.

    A joint investigation between the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Lancashire Police has been launched.

    The 32-year-old has already agreed a deal in principle with the club, although he still has a year left on his contract at Goodison Park.

    The trip to the capital of the United States is understood to be a fact-finding mission.

    Rooney re-joined Everton in July 2017 having spent 13 seasons at Manchester United.

    An alleged Islamic State (IS) supporter encouraged "lone wolf" attackers to target Prince George and poison supermarket ice-cream, a court has heard.

    Husnain Rashid, of Nelson, Lancashire, ran a channel on the Telegram messaging app called the “Lone Mujahid,” jurors were told.

    Woolwich Crown Court was told that he “offered assistance with almost every conceivable type of attack."

    The 32-year-old also called for ice creams to be poisoned and for the four-year-old prince to be targeted at Thomas's prep school in south-west London, the court heard.

    Prosecutor Annabel Darlow said: "His proposals were indiscriminate and made no distinction between adult and child, between members of fighting forces and civilians."

    Rashid, 32, denies six terrorism offences.

    The trial continues.
