Keith Pemberton, 78, from Sale, Greater Manchester was one of many to hang a handwritten note on one of the 28 Trees of Hope in Manchester city centre.
He said: "It's a very solemn day.
"You never think something so terrible will happen in your city.
"But have have to show togetherness and pay respect to the victims."
His wife, Babs Pemberton, 78, said: "It's still very raw.
"But we had to come and I hope they do a memorial every year."
