    The former head of the British Army has called for help for veterans suffering side-effects from an anti-malarial drug.

    Lord Dannatt, who lives in Norfolk, said he refused to take the drug after seeing its effects on his soldier son. 

    Nearly 800 ex-service personnel are seeking compensation for the mental health effects of Larium. 

    The Ministry of Defence says for the past three years it has used Larium only after a risk assessment.

    Nail-biting manoeuvres by a Norfolk aerobatics team are set to wow viewers of a new BBC2 series tonight.

    Wildcats Aerobatics, external, based at Old Buckenham, were followed during last year's flying season for a third episode of Skies Above Britain.

    Cameras were given unprecedented access to the team and pilots Willie Cruickshank (pictured left) and Al Coutts (right), while they grieved for colleague David Jenkins who died in a plane crash in April 2015.

    Mr Cruickshank said: "Giving a film crew unrestricted access to follow us at home, at work, in the hangar and in the air was a new, exciting yet nerve-wracking experience. 

    "The 2015 season display was dominated by tragedy."

    The team will be live on Twitter, external and Facebook, external for 30 minutes after the programme is broadcast at 20:00.

    Sky Sports, external are reporting Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy could be on the way to Sunderland.

    The Canaries keeper has been a regular since his arrival in 2010. However, his starting place is at risk after Northern Ireland number one Michael McGovern joined this summer. 

    The Black Cats are on the look-out for a new man between the sticks after Vito Mannone was ruled out for three months. 

    We should know if this is just speculation later today.

    Norwich City's maiden EFL Trophy campaign got off to a flyer last night, as the Canaries' under-23 side beat Peterborough United 6-1 away. 

    Tony Andreu scored a hat-trick for City, with Josh Murphy getting a brace. James Maddison also scored. 

    The newly revamped Johnstone's Paint Trophy now allows certain Premier League and Championship youth squads to take part alongside Leagues One and Two. 

    Norwich City face Barnet and MK Dons in their group, alongside Posh.

  7. West Norfolk council considers closing public loos to save moneypublished at 09:29 British Summer Time 31 August 2016

    Earlier we told you about a woman who is spending her own money to keep public loos open near Great Yarmouth.

    Now the British Toilet Association, external (BTA) has stepped into the debate and says public toilets in King's Lynn and West Norfolk must stay open after the local authority announced it's considering shutting six blocks there with a view to saving money. 

    The council says it costs nearly £400,000 a year to run public toilets in the district. 

    But Raymond Martin, from the BTA, says closing them will have unintended consequences. 

    "You start getting an increase in street urination and at night times people start going to the toilet in shop doorways when they come out of pubs," he said.

    A woman in Norfolk is spending hundreds of pounds of her own money each month to keep some public toilets open at Acle Bridge where she runs a cafe.

    Heather Stokes says she spends just over £100 a month to pay a cleaner to keep the local toilet block clean while the local council pays the cost of toilet paper, cleaning products, water and electricity for the block. 

    Mrs Stokes said before she came to an arrangement with the council to keep the block open people had been defecating in public areas. 

    Great Yarmouth Borough Council , externalhad intended closing the loos earlier this year to save money.

    A Norfolk man who's been helping refugees in the Calais "Jungle" since November was so struck by the number of unaccompanied children desperate to speak to family and friends that he started a Facebook page to raise funds to top up their phone credits, external..

    In April, they topped up the phone of a 7-year-old boy, Ahmed - a week later the little boy was one of 15 people trapped in a refrigerated lorry, external, trying to sneak into England - he was able to use his phone to text that he was suffocating. James says that without them topping up his credit, the migrants would have died... "it's literally a matter of life or death."

    The social worker says the group has been going since 1 February, and since then they've collected £100,000 worth of credit - more than he'd ever expected.

  14. Just thousands take part in devolution consultationpublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 30 August 2016

    Less than 1% of people put themselves forward to comment in a consultation on devolution, external for Norfolk and Suffolk. 

    Out of a population of 1.5m in the two counties, just 8,000 took part.  A devolution deal would mean Norfolk and Suffolk sharing a mayor, with powers over roads and housing projects.

    The public consultation on the plan ended last week.

    A Norfolk village is getting £1,000 to bring its village sign back to life, external.

    The money for Griston is from Breckland council and comes on top of other locally-raised funds.

    The current sign is beyond repair and needs replacing so the village can continue to highlight its connection to the children's tale Babes in the Wood.

    The new sign will be an exact replica of the one created by artist Harry Carter (seen above), depicting the story of the wicked uncle of Griston Hall and the two babes, external, believed to be his niece and nephew.
