Her baking may have taken a battering from Paul and Mary, but Norfolk's Great British Bake Off contestant Kate Barmby was welcomed by us cake-lovers when she popped into the BBC in Norwich.

Kate Barmby, in blue patterned dress, holding a sponge cake in the radio studio

Kate, who brought along a jam-filled Victoria sponge, says it was a "privilege" to be one of the last BBC bake-off bakers, and to get nearly halfway through the series was "brilliant".

"Batter isn't really my thing... I'm really quite a creative and artistic baker and batter is an unpredictable beast... I like bread work, pastry and sugar craft," she said.

A close-up of the sponge cake, with icing sugar and a pattern of swallows on top

The mother-of-two who lives near Brooke, is the fourth contestant to be dumped by Hollywood and Berry in this series, but says she hasn't "completely humiliated" herself, adding: "There's been some fantastic bakes among some of the shocking ones.

"I'm going to pick myself up and carry on... I'm not going to cry."

The cake on a plate, most of it has been cut and taken away

Kate, who loves cake art and design now wants to pursue that creative aspect of her baking. We wish you all the best Kate - and by the way, BBC Radio Norfolk producer Edd Smith says the cake was "scrummy!".

  2. Fire destroys timber-framed hallpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

A timber-framed building that was once used by the Young Citizen's Guild in Hemsby has been destroyed in a fire.

Holiday chalets near the site, which were all occupied, had to be evacuated as a precaution.

Narrow roads made access to the site difficult for firefighters.

The building is now a pile of ashes. An investigation will look into the cause of the fire.

  3. Transport cuts would impact on day care centre userspublished at 10:53 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    Jill Bennett
    BBC Radio Norfolk

Fears have been raised that further cuts to the adult social care transport budget will affect day care centres in Norfolk.

Transport is vital for them, with many people coming in from towns and villages many miles away.

I've been to the Aspires Day Service centre in Fincham, external, where 47 adults with various disabilities come to work and socialise - many of them have been coming for years.

A view of the Aspires Day Service centre workshop, Fincham, Norfolk

A lot of the people here have to travel some distance. Joint manager Janice Lunan told me that a cut to transport costs would have an enormous impact on them as the adults have a fairly limited amount of money.

    Quote Message

The transport prescribed by Norfolk County Council can cost £25 a day - that's a sizeable chunk of their benefits... most of our users come from the King's Lynn area and with community transport it could work out to about £75 a week."

  4. Council leader says 'all social care service are under pressure'published at 10:47 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    Caroline Kingdon
    BBC Local Live

Norfolk County Council, external is looking at taking £1.7m from the adult social care transport budget, leading to one group saying it could mean disabled people becoming prisoners in their own homes.

The savings would be delivered by asking people to use public or community transport where they're assessed to be able to do so, and making sure people use their Motability vehicle or mobility allowance for their transport.

The Conservative leader of the council, Cliff Jordan, says all their social care services are under pressure, with less money from the government and an increasing demand for services.

    Quote Message

We're listening, we're genuinely listening... I'm trying to get for next year a budget that serves the people and gets value for money for the taxpayers. Professionals work within the county, assessing people for their needs - and if they're genuinely assessed for something they need, they get it.

    Caroline Kingdon
    BBC Local Live

Nearby holiday chalets were evacuated as a precaution last night, when a fire broke out in a timber-framed building in Hemsby.

Ten appliances and 40 firefighters tackled the blaze, which started shortly before 19:45 in a hall formerly used by the Young Citizen's Guild.

Because of the risk of the fire spreading, Norfolk Fire & Rescue's incident commander Alan Nichols says they had to evacuate the nearby chalets, which were fully occupied.

He says the blaze developed very quickly, but conditions worked in their favour.

    Quote Message

We were very, very fortunate that the wind conditions were very still. Had the wind been going across the site the situation could have been very different - the swift action of the firefighters meant the fire was knocked back very quickly.".
