  8. Service to remember helicopter crash casualtiespublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    Andrew Turner
    BBC Radio Norfolk

A service of remembrance will be held at Caister lifeboat station this evening to commemorate the lives of a Whirlwind Helicopter crew which crashed nearby 50 years ago tonight.

The Search and Rescue crew from 202 Squadron at RAF Coltishall were on exercise navigation training inland over Norfolk and Suffolk, and over the coast from Pakefield Rifle Range up to the Great Yarmouth area.

But at 19:50, despite having only flown 10 hours after a major overhaul, a rotor blade broke off the Westland Whirlwind - causing it to ditch into the sea.

It was witnessed by Ivan Jones, then a 14-year-old boy who'd just joined Caister Lifeboat. He was on look-out duty at the time, and told me what he saw.

"I wasn't looking at the helicopter in particular, I knew there was one around - I'd heard it... then I heard a noise, I looked out and saw the yellow Search and Rescue helicopter which looked like it was over the Seashore Holiday Camp... something fell from it, which I now know was the rotor blade and it headed out towards sea."

    Quote Message

I didn't actually see it hit the sea... that pilot was probably a bit of a hero, because if it had dropped straight down it would have been on the holiday camp."

  9. So why won't Norman Lamb run?published at 15:42 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    Andrew Sinclair
    BBC Look East political correspondent

It's impossible to overestimate the pressure that Norman Lamb has been under during the last few months.

His seat was the main Conservative target in East Anglia during the election. It was a tough - at times nasty - campaign as the Tories bombarded North Norfolk with big name visits, leaflets and advertising. The Lib Dem cause was not helped by the fact that 59% of people voted to leave the EU.

"We threw everything at him in that election, he's aged ten years," a Conservative MP told me the other day.

That's probably the main reason why Mr Lamb isn't standing for the leadership. He's exhausted and he knows he'll have a reduced majority of 3,500 to defend whenever the next election is held.

    Norman Lamb MP

But he is also a man who at times has appeared a little detached from his party and its policies. He is popular with members, he's popular with his constituents and he's won a lot of credit for his work on mental health - work which he'll be able to continue now that there's no chance of him becoming leader.

Leading the Lib Dems, a party which is still struggling for an identity following its time in coalition and its subsequent disastrous defeat, will be no easy task.

I think Mr Lamb has concluded that he has enough on his plate without any more hassle.

  10. Norman Lamb rules himself out of party leadership racepublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    Andrew Sinclair
    BBC Look East political correspondent

The Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has announced he's not standing to be leader of the Liberal Democrats.

In a statement, he admitted to having differences with his party over the issue of Brexit.

He also said that he'd just fought a "gruelling" campaign to hold on to his seat, which friends say has left him exhausted.

Mr Lamb has described the party's policy of holding a second Brexit referendum as "toxic".

He says many in the party saw his decision to abstain during the Article 50 vote "as an act of betrayal" and he felt wounded when an anonymous Lib Dem source told a newspaper that it looked like he couldn't make a tough call.

"It is actually quite tough to go against your party, and I did it on a matter of principle," he said.

During the campaign, Mr Lamb found himself "sympathising with those who felt that the party was not listening to them and was treating them with some disdain".

    Norman Lamb MP

He wants the Liberal Democrats to engage in more cross-party working in the new hung parliament, he also wants it to flag up issues like climate change which he says are not being properly debated.

Mr Lamb was seen as one of the favourites to lead his party and is popular both with members and political opponents. But he has decided that it is not for him.

  11. Photos: From bingo hall to multiplexpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

More now on our story of the four-screen cinema that will soon be opening in Gorleston.

In the 1960s bingo was very much the fashion... and in 1964 the final curtain went down at the Palace cinema, and it became a bingo hall.

Now work is under way to transform the Art Deco building back into a cinema - this time a four-screen multiplex.

The walls are being cladded , new ones created - but the basic structure will remain.

Patrick Duffy, of Palatial Leisure, is converting the Palace, and he says it will attract a lot of people into the town who'd normally go to Norwich.

He doesn't know what the last film to be shown at the old cinema was - if you do, we'd love to hear from you. But Patrick says films are already booked for when the cinema opens its doors in a few weeks time.

It has been more than 50 years since the last film was shown at the Palace in Gorleston.

The Art Deco building on the High Street, a cinema from 1939, was converted into a bingo hall in the 1960s. But now it's being turned back into a movie house - a multiplex, with four screens

The Palace bingo club ni Gorleston

Patrick Duffy is the man behind the plans, and he told me the seaside town is now at the centre of what he calls a conservative nightlife.

"You've got Wetherspoons coming, no nightclubs or whatever, but people who like to go out for an evening will now be able to come into Gorleston."

Patrick Duffy, inside the former bingo hall

He expects to open the brand new, state-of-the art multiplex in around five to six weeks, but won't rush it as he wants to make sure they have the most comfortable seating and the accoustics are absolutely right.

    Quote Message

We've done no leasing or rentals, we've purchased everything - this means we'll have the top four films available in the UK right here in Gorleston... you can go to Norwich, Ipswich, anywhere, but you're not going to get any better than you've got here."
