The Norwich University of the Arts, external (NUA) has achieved the highest rating of "Gold" in a new award measuring teaching excellence.

The Teaching Excellent Framework measures universities in three areas... teaching quality, learning environment and student outcome.

The University of East Anglia, external (UEA) was given a silver rating.

Chris Husbands, of The Teaching Excellence Framework, external, said of the system: "It measures where it's got systems in place to keep students on their course when things get tough... the effectiveness and speed of feedback on work, and looking at the quality of library and other learning resources."

The South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon has called for "punitive taxes" to be imposed on developers who build new properties and then leave them empty.

Speaking during a debate in parliament on the Grenfell fire tragedy, Mr Bacon said: "In recent years London has seen many high quality high rises built often financed with hot foreign money and then left empty for years, often with the kitchens still in cling film."

Mr Bacon, who has always had a great interest in house building, said that if brand new properties were being left empty for many years the government should discuss "changing the taxation regime so that, as in New York, these people face punitive taxation."

The prime minister said Mr Bacon had raised "an interesting point" although she said that the number of unoccupied homes in London was currently at a low level.

The Ministry of Defence has announced a £135m contract to support the new fast jets at RAF Marham.

The investment will deliver a new hangar capable of housing 12 of the F-35 Lightning II's. Vertical landing pads will also be built for the jets, as well as resurfacing two existing runways.

It's the last of seven projects worth £250m undertaken to prepare the air base for the arrival of the jets next year. RAF Marham's existing Tornado fleet will retire in 2019.

Back to the story that we brought you yesterday, on how the Northern Distributor Road (NDR) is going millions of pounds over budget.

The 12-mile link road around northern Norwich, external runs from the north west of the city to join the A47 at Postwick.

A farmer from south Norfolk says crops could rot in the ground if people from Europe aren't allowed freely in to the country.

Andy Allen grows 250 tonnes of asparagus each year on his farm at Great Ellingham. He needs 125 migrant workers to harvest and pack the crop.

But Brexit is already causing farm labourers to choose other places to work, instead of the UK, says Mr Allen, with the value of the pound meaning workers lose money when they change it back to Euros.

Farmers in Norfolk say they're struggling to survive because of a shortage of migrant labour.

A BBC investigation has found that almost half of our salad and summer fruit growers can't get enough workers for the picking season. It means that the future of some businesses is uncertain, unless they can get regular staff.

Tim Papworth, who farms in north Norfolk, is vice chairman of the National Farmers' Union national potato forum, says the outlook isn't good. He knows of farmers that are unable to harvest crops because of a lack of staff.

The actor playing the role of an exiled Punjab King in a new movie about his life has laid flowers at the Maharajah's grave on the Elveden Estate near Thetford.

Satinder Sartaaj is the lead in a new biopic called 'The Black Prince', which tells the story of the 19th century Maharajah Duleep Singh.

"I've been here twice, once before filming because I came here just to feel the ambience, the aura of the place.

"Sikhs don't consider him a hero because they say he was a womaniser who lived a lavish life, converted to Christianity... but when you get to know his life after he was reunited with his mother he made a 360 degree turnaround."

The 7,000 acre (69 km²) country estate at Elveden on the border between Norfolk and Suffolk, close to Thetford, was purchased by the British govenment for the Maharajah in 1863.

He is said to have enjoyed living there, restoring the church, cottages and school and was named 'The Black Prince' by Queen Victoria, who was very fond of him.

He tried to return to India several times but was prevented from doing so by the British authorities who had taken over the Indian province.

He married twice and fathered eight children, some of whom could boast Queen Victoria as their godmother.

Delays and changes to Norwich's Northern Distributor Road mean that the taxpayer will have to pay millions more than anticipated, as reported in the Eastern Daily Press, external.

The 12-mile-long road to bypass the north of the city is being constructed by Balfour Beattie and is due to open next Spring.

It was supposed to cost about £148m but the project has been given additional money since then.

Councillor Denise Carlo for the Green Party says as well as the rising costs, lack of scrutiny is a further issue after the council decided to hold today's committee meeting behind closed doors.

"I think the council is very embarrassed," she said.

"In 2011 at the inquiry NCC told the Department of Transport that the costs (of about £148m) were final and yet we've seen a huge increase of £37m since then and the Norfolk taxpayer is bearing about £90m of the cost."

A spokesman for the council said commercially sensitive information was behind the decision not to hold an open meeting.

Patients at a west Norfolk hospice can finally stay there overnight after the completion of a new unit.

Tapping House at Hillington near King's Lynn has been offering palliative day care for years.

But a fundraising campaign has supported the opening of a nine bedroom inpatient facility which has been named after Dr Hugh Ford who first set up a hospice in 1984.

Lindsay Carter, chief executive, says the rooms are very high spec.

"We've got single rooms, all en-suite with wifi, air-conditioning, a place for a relative to stay and every room has a garden aspect with a patio door too so people can sit outside," she said.

The hospice costs about £2.5m a year to run and the new unit will add another £750,000 to that bill.

Norman Lamb, the MP for North Norfolk and former health minister, has criticised the government for leaving out funding changes to social care from the Queen's Speech.

The Queen's Speech outlines the government's agenda for the next two years in parliament. It mainly focused on the country's departure from the European Union.

Mr Lamb said: "Social care is in a state of total crisis. A million older people are missing out on care they need and services face a funding black hole of billions in this year alone.

"In coalition we commissioned the Dilnot report - an independent, expert led review of social care funding - yet the Conservatives have chosen to ignore the recommendations.

"Now they are simply kicking the issue into the long grass again with more consultation, after their deeply unfair Dementia Tax was clearly rejected by voters."

A woman in her 30s has been arrested after a man was stabbed in Norwich this morning.

Police, including armed officers, attended the scene just after midnight following reports he had been wounded with a knife during an incident in Watson Grove.

The victim, a man in his 50s, suffered a serious chest injury.

He was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital for treatment.

Det Con Craig Leeder, said it was an isolated incident:

"We are in the early stages of our investigation and working to establish a sequence of events," he said.

An actor, playing the lead in a biopic about the last king of the Punjab who was exiled near Norfolk is visiting his grave today.

Satinder Sartaaj is playing the lead in a new biopic called 'The Black Prince'.

The film is about the tragic life of the Maharajah Duleep Singh who at the age of five was removed from the throne, taken from his mother and brought to England.

Here he was introduced to Queen Victoria, who gave him the name of 'The Black Prince.'

The Mahrajah was indoctrinated into Christianity aged 15 but reconverted to Sikhism in later life.

Despite this he was given a Christian burial on the Elveden Estate near Thetford.

The movie, external is out next month.
