  4. 'Flying ring' seal 'likely to require care for months'published at 17:24 British Summer Time 15 September 2017

A seal captured with a flying ring stuck around its neck is likely to remain in the care of the RSPCA for at least five months, the charity said.

The female grey seal, who's been named Frisbee, was taken to the East Winch centre yesterday, where manager Alison Charles said she was "extremely emaciated".

The ring has now been cut off, but Alison said the wound on the adult seal's neck was "very deep and infected".

Alison believes Frisbee may have spotted the ring in the water and it became stuck on her neck when she went to investigate.

"Over the months she has grown it's become more and more embedded in her neck... it's likely it would have been restricting her from eating and drinking," she said.

"It was just horrible to see, the poor girl... once removed, she started to shake her head... I guess it was a relief to have it off after all those months."

Frisbee isn't out of the woods yet - she has been given antibiotics, painkillers and steroids, and will be treated for a number of months.

  6. Go-kart theft 'ruins little boy's dream'published at 16:41 British Summer Time 15 September 2017

A budding racing driver has been left devastated after his go-kart was stolen days before he was set to compete at an event.

Matthew, 11, went to check on his go-kart after the family noticed the doors of the garage were open at their Costessey home yesterday morning.

But dad Christopher Hawkins said Matthew "stood dumbstruck" and walked indoors as if nothing had happened.

"It took him about half-an-hour before realising he wouldn't be able to do the go-karting he was doing this weekend... and then he just burst into tears," he said.

"When I saw the look on his face, I was more devastated than him."

Matthew started racing a year ago and as soon as school finished today he was set to go to Wales to take part in a National Schools and Youth Group Karting Association, external (Natska) event.

The family got the chance to borrow a go-kart, but Christopher said they decided not to as "none of us are in the mood to go now".

Dad and son had worked together to build the go-kart after Christopher bought it in bits last year.

"We worked as a family to get it to the stage where he could go and race in it. Why they have to come and take things that other people struggle to buy... they've ruined a little boy's dream."

Norfolk police say they're investigating the theft, which happened sometime between 23:00 on Wednesday and 07:00 yesterday.

The owner of a herd of missing goats says she's concerned they've been rustled for meat.

The goats had recently been treated with strong drugs for a skin condition, and Lucy says if they have been stolen for consumption there could be problems for human health.

  12. NDR: 'Plans to complete missing link'published at 10:21 British Summer Time 15 September 2017

The Northern Distributor Road, external links the east of Norwich, from Postwick, to the west.

Once finished, it won't be a complete road around Norwich. The final link - through the Wensum Valley to join the A47 - was scrapped following concerns from environmental groups and local residents.

When the Conservatives launched their manifesto for this year's county council elections in Norfolk, they promised to complete the NDR if they retained power - which they did.

Martin Wilby, who chairs the transport committee, said the party hopes the extension can come to fruition...

  13. NDR: 'Ahead of schedule'published at 10:17 British Summer Time 15 September 2017

Parts of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road, external (NDR) could be open before Christmas.

The county council says good weather means the western part of the dual carriageway is ahead of schedule.

Martin Wilby, who chairs the transport committee, said it's looking to open an eight-mile stretch at the end of October or early November.

This would run from the Fakenham Road roundabout, to the north of Taverham, to the A140 Cromer Road.

"As soon as we open that part of the road, people will be using it, and there'll be less congestion around the ring road," Mr Wilby said.

NDR work earlier this year, at Taverham

If progress continues to go well, Mr Wilby said the section from the Wroxham Road to the Cromer Road would open by the end of this year.

The NDR will be a 12.5-mile dual carriageway, running from the A47 at Postwick, east of Norwich, to the A1067 Fakenham Road, north of Taverham.

Mr Wilby said it was still sticking to a completion date of spring 2018 and said once opened the road would make a huge difference to Norfolk.

Norfolk has been left behind in infrastructure over the last few years and this is a big part of making a difference... I feel it's my job and my committee's job to change Norfolk and get some good infrastructure here in place."
