  4. More money for Norfolk's schoolspublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Andrew Sinclair
    BBC Look East political correspondent

The government has announced extra funding for schools in Norfolk.

The figures have only just been released, but it looks as if ministers will be giving an extra £16m to schools in Norfolk over the next two years - an increase of 3%.

The announcement came as part of a new funding formula which sees an increase in the amount paid per pupil and an additional grant for rural schools.

The extra money follows an intensive campaign by teaching unions which saw many schools taking the unprecedented step of writing to parents to ask them to raise the issue with their MP. The issue also featured heavily in the general election.

Schools in Norfolk have cut bus services, reduced courses and shed teaching support staff because of the growing pressure on their finances.

This extra money will help, but critics say that it barely covers the cost of inflation and they will fear that schools will continue to struggle.

  5. 'Year's worth' of duty-evading tobacco seized in Norfolkpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

A haul of tax-evading tobacco discovered by Norfolk Trading Standards earlier this week amounts to more than the total amount of hand-rolling tobacco seized in the county in the whole of last year.

On Monday, three inspections were carried out at retail businesses in Great Yarmouth, with the assistance of Norfolk Constabulary and tobacco detection dogs Yoyo (pictured below), Scamp and Ralph.

They seized 4,700 cigarettes and 4.65kg (10lbs) of hand rolling tobacco from three stores, which was hidden in a number of ways including behind a fuse box wired to the mains electric.

Two warrants were executed at premises related to one of the stores and a further 69,000 cigarettes and 37.5kg (83lbs) of hand-rolling tobacco was seized.

In the afternoon, two stores were visited in Norwich and more than 1000 cigarettes and 4kg (8.9lbs) of hand-rolling tobacco was seized.

Sophie Leney, Head of Trading Standards said last year they were involved in the seizure of 183,820 illegal cigarettes and 49.1kg (108lbs) of illegal hand rolling tobacco.

So far this year, she said they've seized more than 130,000 illegal cigarettes and nearly 53kg (117lbs) of illegal hand rolling tobacco in Norfolk.

Brian Chatten, of Trading Standards said retailers make smoking more accessible to children by selling illegal tobacco at pocket money prices, putting the lives of young people at risk.

    Quote Message

Hopefully these raids will raise awareness of our campaign to crack down on sellers of illegal tobacco and encourage local residents to come forward with any information they may have... Trading Standards and the police are always ready to respond to any information they receive.”

The proposal, for 52 houses, would have seen Bracon Ash, near Wymondham, double in size.

Hundreds of local people had raised objections to the plans.

South Norfolk councillors, external said the development would have put too much strain on local infrastructure.

Colin Rudd, chair of the parish council, says common sense prevailed, and it was the right decision.

    Quote Message

This is a very pretty rural village and it would have destroyed the main input into the village by putting 52 houses there, a 55% increase in the present housing."
