  7. Happy birthday BBC Radio Norfolkpublished at 13:43 British Summer Time 11 September 2017

    BBC Radio Norfolk

BBC Radio Norfolk is celebrating its 37th birthday today.

The station first went on-air at 17.55 on 11 September 1980 - the timing was chosen so it could be featured on BBC Look East, which was then broadcast at that time.

Michael Barton, who was then the Controller of BBC Local Radio, recalls how the station's launch came down to the toss of a coin. Both the BBC and commercial radio wanted to start stations in Norfolk, but the government didn't want them to both launch at the same point.

So a coin was tossed, and Michael made the right call!

    Quote Message

They said, 'Only one of you can go to Norfolk this time around - who's it to be?' And we actually tossed a coin, and I won, and that's how Norfolk got on the air in 1980!"
