    Team GB's Olympic campaign was launched with a ceremony at British House in Rio last night. It was there it was announced that Andy Murray would be the flag bearer.

    Also at the event was Nohampton sailor Dylan Fletcher (left), here with his 49er class team-mater Alain Sign (right).

    Northampton Saints and Wales winger George North is off to the Olympics - not to compete in the Rugby 7s but rather to support his partner Becky James who is part of the Great Britain cycling team.

    The opening ceremony is late tomorrow evening, starting around midnight UK time.

  3. Abington Street: Some good news with new cafe and restaurantpublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 4 August 2016

    Despite recent closures and empty units it's not all bad news for Northampton's Abington Street as the signage for this new cafe has just gone up.

    There former Eastgate pub is also currently being turned into a fast food restaurant.

    Shoppers I spoke to today said it was "depressing" there were empty shops, but others felt there were improvements in the town centre with the recent opening of new cafes and shops.

    As well as the closures this week in Abington Street that we mentioned earlier, there are several shops on the town centre street that remain empty, including the large former Primark site which became a home-wares store.

    The Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for regeneration, Tim Hadland, has said the authority is constantly looking to improve the environment of the town centre.

    Mr Hadland said top half of Abington Street had been "in a pretty poor state" but said that eventually people would see the "benefits of refurbishment". However he admitted it was "frustrating" there were empty shops.

    This cafe closed down last month and is yet to re-open or be taken over...

    Northamptonshire are all out for 321 in their first innings against Glamorgan.

    It's been a fine comeback from 38 for 4 and Saif Zaib ending the innings unbeaten on 65.

    The Mayor of Wellingborough, Malcolm Waters, says he thinks the town's excellent road and rail communication links continue to stand it in good stead, a year on from being named the most affordable London commuter town in the country.

    In 2015, Wellingborough's average house price of £160,000 made it markedly cheaper than London and every area within commuting distance. The next best value town was Kettering, making Northamptonshire ideally placed - Lloyd's said - for rail commuters.  

    But Mr Waters admitted there are challenges with thousands of homes are planned for Wellingborough at Stanton Cross, leaving it at risk of becoming a dormitory town.

  7. Former Oundle Primary School building to be turned into housespublished at 14:30

    Plans to turn the former Oundle Primary School building into town houses and apartments have been approved - despite being criticised by some residents.

    They claimed the town needs more homes for first time buyers and the elderly and not more mews cottages.

    The planning permission has been approved for the old stone school building on Milton Road.  It'll be turned into five town houses and a studio apartment.

    The outbuildings will be demolished to make way for six apartments and four mews cottages.

    The sign says 'unforseen circumstances' but the Northampton Chronicle & Echo report, external that it has closed over a "dispute over the direction the outlet was heading in".

  11. Corby joins study into Northamptonshire's unitary authoritiespublished at 12:27 British Summer Time 4 August 2016

    Corby is the latest local authority to join a study looking at new ways to provide services to people living in the county.

    The former leader of Northamptonshire County Council, Jim Harker, previously suggested all eight of our councils be scrapped and replaced by one new county-wide council, but the borough and district councils fear a loss of local decision-making.

    Northampton, Kettering, Daventry, East Northants - and now Corby - have each agreed to contribute £25,000 to pay for a study into options for reorganisation.

  12. Violent crime in or near Northampton nightclubs at highest rate for at least five yearspublished at 11:39 British Summer Time 4 August 2016

    More than 130 crimes took place in or near nightclubs in just one street in Northampton town centre for the first five months of this year, police data shows.

    Figures compiled by the Herald and Post, external found that 56 of the 166 crimes recorded by police in Bridge Street from January to May were incidents of violence or sexual offences.

  13. Northampton Town Supporters' Trust 'disappointed' over new EFL Trophy formatpublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 4 August 2016

    In July changes were announced to the EFL Trophy (formerly Johnstone's Paint Trophy) to include 15 Premier League academy sides.

    Ahead of the new Football League season getting under way Northampton Town Supporters' Trust have issued a statement, external about their "disappointment at the lack of consultation with supporters over the changes".

    The trust describe the changes as "woefully under prepared and ill-thought" and go on to say they would not call for a boycott, but that if fans do want to "take a stand" against the competition, they propose a walkout in the style of Portsmouth Supporters’ Trust, who will be walking out as soon as the kick-off whistle is blown having purchased a ticket.

  15. Northamptonshire Telegraph: Poppies unveil plans for new stadiumpublished at 09:30

    Kettering Town Football Club have unveiled draft plans to redevelop their Latimer Park home in Burton Latimer, according to the Northamptonshire Telegraph, external.

    Poppies chairman Ritchie Jeune confirmed the club have ambitious hopes of building a 6,500-capacity stadium, gym, an artificial pitch and sports hall on the site where they have secured a 25-year lease.

    Before moving to Latimer Park in 2013, the Poppies played at the former home of Rushden & Diamonds Nene Park, following the departure from Rockingham Road (pictured) in 2011, where the club had played since 1897.

    Carey, 19, claimed 3-37 in 10 overs but loan debutant Laurie Evans and David Murphy (pictured) added 70 for the fifth wicket to salvage the visitors' day.
