A Ferrari 550 Maranello which once belonged to Sir Geoff Hurst will go under the hammer at the Silverstone Classic, one of the biggest events in the Northamptonshire circuit's calendar.

    Alex Winter

Northamptonshire have failed to produce their best cricket in the County Championship this season but, until this week’s match, still harboured hopes of a steady campaign.

But they plunged back to the horrors of 2014 with a record defeat against Worcestershire. It was a truly awful performance and head coach David Ripley was exceptionally disappointed, saying “only one or two players emerged with any credit”.

Northants now have six more four-day matches to ensure 2016 is not remembered as one of their poorest in recent times in the County Championship.

A total of £450,000 has already been spent on legal issues. The authority says that some of the money has been spent on retaining forensic accountants to scrutinise the club's financial position, to give a better understanding of where the money may have gone, so the council can try to trace and recover it.

It's hoped the costs will ultimately be recovered from the ongoing action to trace the money and from the redevelopment of land at Sixfields. Money recovered will be paid back into reserves.
