    The sudden collapse of a bridge in Leicestershire has caused major disruption to East Midlands Trains services.

    A limited number of trains will run between Leicester and London St Pancras, stopping at Kettering, but they will be subject to last minute changes.

    Currently all trains from Corby are cancelled, with passengers having to get a bus to Kettering to catch a train.

    East Midland Trains says it does not expect the line to open today.

    The judge in the trial of man accused of raping and murdering India Chipchase has given the jury direction on what verdicts it can reach.

    He has told the six men and six women they have three options regarding the murder charge - guilty of murder, not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter, or not guilty.

    Regarding the rape charge, he tells them Edward Tenniswood can only be found guilty or not guilty.

    The jury is now deliberating on its decision.

    The jury in the trial of a man accused of murdering India Chipchase in Northampton has retired to consider its verdict.

    Edward Tenniswood, 52, of Stanley Road, Northampton, is on trial at Birmingham Crown Court accused of raping and killing the 20-year-old, whose body was found at his home after she was reporting missing following a night out at the end of January.

    A plan for a new 60-bed unit at Northampton General Hospital (NGH) is a "worrying development", according to one of the county's top health commissioners.

    NGH says the beds are needed because of increased demand and it's waiting to find out if the proposal will be funded.

    But the Nene Clinical Commisioning Group (CCG) says spending money on a unit would mean less cash to help move people out of hospital who don't need to be there.

  5. India Chipchase: Jury set to begin deliberations todaypublished at 08:49 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

    The jury in the trial of Edward Tenniswood is likely to begin its deliberations today.

    The 52-year-old from Northampton is accused of raping and murdering India Chipchase in the town earlier this year.

    Prosecutors at Birmingham Crown Court say Mr Tenniswood spotted the 20-year-old outside a bar in Northampton, where she had been drinking.

    They say he told staff he would help Miss Chipchase home. Instead, they say he took her to his house on Stanley Road where he raped and strangled her.

    She was found dead on a mattress in Mr Tenniswood's house and the defendant was was arrested at a hotel bar nearby.

    Mr Tenniswood denies the charges, saying the sex was consensual and that he throttled her accidentally.

  6. Northants secure home quarter-final in One-Day Cup and top group without bowling a ballpublished at 08:31 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

    With victory over Derbyshire on Sunday, Northants earned a quarter-final place in the One-Day cup, but didn't know where they would be playing.

    Thanks to the results yesterday, they ended up topping their group, and now have a home quarter-final.

  7. Leicestershire bridge collapse stops trains to and from Corbypublished at 08:26 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

    The sudden collapse of bridge is causing major disruption to trains between the East Midlands and London.

    It collapsed at Barrow Upon Soar, near Loughborough, in the early hours, affecting the line north of Leicester.

    But it means that from Corby there are no direct trains to or from London St Pancras today. Passengers will need to use a replacement bus to connect with trains to or from Kettering. 

    Also there is only a limited East Midlands Trains service to and from Wellingborough and Kettering.

    New plans to save millions of pounds at Northamptonshire County Council have been approved by the authority's ruling cabinet.

    It says the cuts in adult social care and children's services are needed, after a report found more than half of £65m of savings announced in March may not be achieved.

    The council says some services haven't made the expected cutbacks and that new pressures had increased the cost of some services.

    £10.7m in children's services and £9.8m in adult social care

    Among the new cuts are a £3.5m saving in reducing staff costs in children's services and a cut to the service that helps people leave hospital, saving £650,000.

    The jury in the trial of a man accused of murdering India Chipchase in Northampton has been sent home for the day.

    Edward Tenniswood, 52, of Stanley Road, Northampton, is accused of raping and killing the 20-year-old, whose body was found at his home after she was reporting missing following a night out at the end of January.

    It is expected that the judge will finish his summing up tomorrow morning at Birmingham Crown Court and the jury will be sent out then to consider its verdict.

    Amateur archaeologists have been taking part in a special two-week dig at Chester Farm, near Rushden.

    Volunteers have been working alongside a professional team, which has revealed a Medieval house and dovecote.

    The site is considered an "archaeological gem" with evidence of a Roman walled town, as well as settlements from the Iron Age.
