  3. Police warning over Pokemon Gopublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Police in Northamptonshire have issued a warning about the use of mobile phone game Pokemon Go after it was revealed the county was a hotspot for gamers. 

    A smartphone update of the Nintendo Game Boy classic, it encourages players to catch monsters via a combination of GPS and augmented reality.

    Its popularity has prompted a series of safety warnings and reports of players finding themselves in dangerous situations.

    A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: "due to the current threat levels, anybody found on a police site for non-police business and without authorisation will be challenged".

    He added: "Don't be tempted to take your phone out in busy or unlit areas where you could be a target for thieves, never play the game while driving and... concentrate on dangers around you."

    If you've had any rain today, it will clear through the early evening, staying dry with light winds overnight. Feeling very humid and muggy as temperatures fall no lower than 15C (59F).

    Rather cloudy on Saturday but with some hazy sunshine at times, and while much of the day will be dry there is the chance of a few showery outbreaks of rain.

    Northamptonshire golfer Ryan Evans looks like missing the cut at his first Open Championship after a four-over-par 75 on the second day at Royal Troon.

    The former Avon Cosmetics telesales operator from Corby looked to be well-placed after a level par 71 in the opening round.

    But Evans, who plays at Wellingborough, dropped five shots on day two, picking up just one birdie at the 16th, to stand 14 shots adrift of clubhouse leader Phil Mickelson.

  6. Silverstone Formula Student event 'not easy to win'published at 17:34 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Thousands of engineering students from all over the world have descended on Silverstone for the "Formula Student" event.

    The annual competition involves teams from universities and colleges in more than 30 countries - each having to design, cost, build, and prove a racing car. 

    Organiser Beth Georgeou said it's not easy to win: "There are three static events that don't involve the car.

    "There's the design, business presentation and cost, there's the track, acceleration and endurance.To get the total a thousand points, they need to compete and place well in all of the events," she said.

  7. Northampton man recovering after Nice attackpublished at 17:20

    Alex Bates, from Stanwick, said he thought he was going to be killed in the attacks in Nice.

    He said: "It was the worst moment of my life, without any doubt, because you really did think you were going to be killed and that's the bottom line. That's the terrible part of it all.

    "I thought somebody was opening fire on the crowds like we have seen in the past, so we were really, really worried for our lives, as everybody was."

    Mr Bates and his wife, who were half-a-mile or so from where the truck ended up, praised the police in Nice who had paraded earlier in the evening as part of the Bastille Day celebrations.

    "Everybody was enjoying the day and it was such a tragedy that it ended up like this. It's just unbelievable - we can't really believe this has happened in a place like Nice."

    A Northamptonshire man has described the terrifying moment he thought he was going to be shot dead amid the chaos of the lorry attack in Nice.

    Alec Bates, who lives in Hua Hin, Thailand, but is originally from Stanwick was on holiday with his wife Jo when the attack happened. 

    He said: "After the firework display had finished we walked up to the square and within literally minutes there was absolutely panic - there was a mass of people, hundreds of people, who came screaming into the square.

    "We did hear noises which we thought may have been fireworks after the firework display by individuals, but it may have been the shots that we heard...

    "We could see the terror on people's faces and we then decided that there was no option but to run right out and get shelter."

    The killing of 84 people celebrating Bastille Day is the worst attack on France since the 13 November attacks 2015.

    About 50 remain in hospital "between life and death", President Francois Hollande says.

    No group has said it carried out the attack.

    Like many councils, Northampton County Council said it would have lowered its flag today as a tribute to those injured in France - had it not already have been lowered in memory of Cllr John Bailey MBE, who died suddenly on Monday following a short battle with cancer.

  11. Andrea Leadsom: Row over male nannies paedophile commentpublished at 15:58

    Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom issued a statement following a newspaper interview where she said it would be sensible not to employ a man to look after children in case they are a paedophile.

    Mrs Leadsom, MP for South Northamptonshire, told The Times: "Most of us don't employ men as nannies, most of us don't. Now you can call that sexist, I call that cautious and very sensible when you look at the stats.

    She added: "Your odds are stacked against you if you employ a man. We know paedophiles are attracted to working with children. I'm sorry but they're the facts."  

    A spokeswoman for Mrs Leadsom has since said: "Andrea Leadsom had a male nanny for five years and was not saying that men are unsuitable as nannies."

  12. Gang attacks cyclist and steals his bike in daylight attackpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    A cyclist was attacked by a group of men and had his specialist bike stolen in at attack in Northampton town centre, police said.

    The victim said that he dropped the bike in fear after being punched by a man during the incident about 18:30 on Tuesday.

    The attacker is described as 18 to 20 year old, of mixed race man and wearing a grey tracksuit.

    He got on the golden-brown Rock Hopper Pro bike and rode off down Stockley Street, right into St Edmunds Road and then onto Wellingborough Road. Police are appealing for witnesses.

    Speaking about Andrea Leadsom's new position, Daventry MP Chris Heaton-Harris said it will be a chance for her to prove herself. 

    He said: "It's a test for her. So she can now prove for herself [what she can do] because her critics were saying she didn't have that Cabinet experience, that she didn't have a secretary of state position with a big government portfolio, so she can now prove what she can do."

    The job of environment secretary will be a test for the South Northamptonshire MP Andrea Leadsom, according to one of the MPs who knows her best.

    Daventry MP Chris Heaton-Harris was involved in Mrs Leadsom's leadership campaign. 

    He says his colleague's new job is a good appointment and will be good for UK agriculture. Adding it will be a chance for Mrs Leadsom to show what she can do.

    A Northamptonshire police officer who was recognised for his bravery with a meeting with the new prime minister says she is warm and smiley.

    PC Gary Liddle (pictured second from right) dragged his colleague PC Rob Monk to safety after he was stabbed in the leg with a samurai sword by an offender in 2014.

    The pair met Theresa May at a special ceremony last night followed by the bravery awards that marked the work of officers around the country.

    PC Liddle said the prime minister welcomed them with "warm handshakes and smiles all round... she took time out to be with us, despite her very busy schedule, and right in the middle of selecting her cabinet... I was delighted."

    The numbers associated with Formula Student competition, external at Silverstone are mind boggling - 156 teams, more than 30 countries, some 2,000 students. 

    The competition - run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers - is into its 19th year and the standard is high. There are cars at Silverstone this weekend with ground-breaking technology in the field of steering, gearboxes and electric motors to name but a few.

    Teams have travelled halfway around the world to be here - including Edith Cowan University, external from Perth, Australia. 

    Team principal Nathan van Vugt said: "We do not really sleep much. Getting in at 08:30, leaving at midnight or sometimes not going home at all. 

    "This is all extra-curricular - I do have a girlfriend, surprisingly! I don't know how she's still with me - she's very understanding."

  17. Nice attack: 'Lessons must be learned' says security expertpublished at 11:50

    Lessons must be learned from attacks on public crowds following on from the lorry attack in France last night in which at least 84 people have died, says a counter terrorism expert from Wellingborough. 

    The lorry slammed through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the southern French city of Nice.

    The driver ploughed on for 2km (1.2 miles) on the Promenade des Anglais at about 23:00 local time, before being shot dead by police.

    Simon Trundle, who worked on counter terrorism for the London Olympics, said: "There is going to be a lot of lessons to learn about last night.  

    "For a number of years now the security forces in England have been advising over these sorts of threats. How to protect crowded places, how to protect people in this situation and I think some of those lessons will need to be transferred over to our French colleagues."

    Newly appointed Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom has cancelled attending a Formula Student annual competition, external at Silverstone today. 

    Mrs Leadsom was due at the centre this morning to see thousands of engineering students from all over the world compete to build a racing car. It would have been one of her first engagements since taking post. 

    We are currently trying to find out why Mrs Leadsom has pulled out of the event.

    Nine children were taken to hospital for treatment after the bus crash in Oundle yesterday afternoon, we have been told.

    Duncan Mills, from the EMLC Academy Trust which covers the Prince William School whose pupils were on the bus, said that of the 50 youngsters on the bus, about 40 were discharged by medical experts on the scene.

    The others were taken to hospitals in Peterborough, Kettering and Nottingham.

    Mr Mills thanked everyone who had helped at the scene. "Obviously the safety and wellbeing of our pupils remains our priority," he said.

    Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
